Mississippi River Blues, Chief Buffalo Nickel, Champaigne Charlie, and such….

By pure chance, along about 1982 or 83 I discovered Leon Redbone, who just happened to be on my car radio accidently. I was hooked because he sounded just like my father, who at times would sing those old 20’s era songs when we would be in the car driving home. There was an uncanny resemblance in their styles and such. I was hooked and began to buy up CDs of Redbone.

Sometime later he made a personal appearance here in Houston, so my wife and I got tickets and attended his performance. It was only after he passed away several years ago that I learned anything about him, where he came from or any details of his career and life. So, if you have never heard him, there are still CDs available. I cannot guarantee you will be affected as I was, but who knows? Just Sayin…RJS

Well, I cannot adqutely describe him, but his style would be something you would hear if you were walking down Bourbon street, New Orleans, and went into one of the Jazz parlors where live performances were drawing folks in off the street. Also, some of the songs popular in the 1920's and 30's. Just Sayin...RJS

In the late 80s or early 90s a young guy that worked for me was a singer and guitar player and told me that I should go to UC San Diego for a concert with Leon, whom I never heard of. My son was a student there at that time living on campus joined us and he was majoring in phycology and minoring in music and he played the guitar. the longer he played the more I liked his style of singing, I was more of a all rock n roll and hard rock guy but I was impressed with him.

There's little to compare between all the modern music, and what Leon did. He was really a sound from the past. I haven't tried it, but believe you can hear a sample by going to google or Youtube and pulling up Leon Redbone. Just Sayin...RJS

I'm pretty sure you can just request 'list of Leon Redbone tunes' on YouTube as you say, Robert ! I haven't heard much of him in some time, but my favorite
Leon tune has long been 'Ain't
Mis-behavin' ! I think his version is the best one, followed closely by Hank, Jr.'s version ! Both good !
