I see alot of questions and statements about things that help us fish but I am concerned about people not having the basic services performed on their engines. How many of you remember to change the foot oil every year. This is a must whether you do it yourself or have someone else do it. This is one thing you do not need to skip or wait till next year . You want your motor to perform then have the foot oil changed.
Next is having the water pump/impeller replaced every two years. The impeller is made of rubber and wears out when using it but it dries out when you don't use the engine. This is another thing that must/needs to be done without skipping it. The I will wait till next year can cost you anywhere from a couple of pistons to a full engine replacement. I know people that have done the old I'll do it next year and it cost them several thousand.
The reason I bring this up I just had mine serviced, new foot oil and new impeller/water pump, and the service guy ay something like if people would do what you do on maintenance they would be a much happier boater due to having to pay for expensive repairs where a $200 charge would really save them. As someone else on here always says "just saying". Keeps you from being stuck on the water. Enjoy your boat by having it serviced. Thanks
Alabama Bill: What is foot oil? Are you referring to oil in the lower unit? That is the only thing I could imagine you were referring to. I do agree with you that regular maintenance will save the motor owner a ton down the road.
I have found, particulsarly in salt water, the engine and boat deterriorate at the same rate wheter you are using it or not, so use the hell out of it to get your money's worth. Just Sayin...RJS
Yes Sir that is what I am referring too. Like you I say use it as much as you can. young man.

Not sure about here in Maryland but in NC a motor requires you to register and that uped the property tax. Have to look into it. Don't mind the regietering it's paying a tax that gets my goat.

Yeah you have to register here too. But sssshhhhhhh (there's no property tax on boats in ct) the fee is different for every foot of boat length, so a yak would be cheaper than my 14ft tin boat. $23.75 Includes "Invasive species "fee. Our boat registration is annual.
What type gasoline for present-day manufactured engines? Will it harm it to use same gas used for car or would you only use marine gas? Just saying.

Not so much the engine its the plastic and rubber componets that the gas devours. Non Ethanol is the way to go if you want to extend the life of the motor.
I use non ethanol with treatment. Check all connections. Vibration does strange things
