A small Wyoming town

This is a true story. The name of the town and participants has been omitted to protect...me. Small town folk have long memories and some of them carry a grudge.

I had a morning interview to do and my subject was delivering a calf so I was stuck there until afternoon. For lunch, I went into the small town diner, the only diner, and ordered a burger and coffee. Before too long the only ones left in the diner besides me were three old ranchers having pie and coffee. It was peaceful, the burger was good, the coffee was good and the old cowboys were behaving.

Well one of them spoke up to the lady who owned the place. He said he really would like to have the recipe for her pie crust. She brightened and asked if he liked it. He said that he had a pair of boots that needed to be resoled and that crust was just the thing for it.

I didn't look up, but focused on my burger and a nearly desperate need to laugh. In a minute or so I took a peek and these guys were sitting at the cleanest table I'd ever seen. Not even a salt shaker. They figured out lunch was over and left. I complimented the meal and left, too.

I've thought about that meal for many years. The diner closed long ago. I've always wondered if he got those boots resoled.

It’s always good to refrain from making fun of the establishment employees. That is, until you’ve finished eating.

It is a good one. Eat before. Don't watch it before going out to dinner now that we can eat out again.
