I well remember a massive fish kill at a local lake probably 40 years ago or so. We had 26 inches of ice well into March and the vegetation that decomposed reduced the the oxygen levels that produced that kill. It rebounded fairing quickly. Hope thatโ€™s the case there.

I think so too Gary. I get saltwater fishing reports from Texas Wildlife and almost all places listed are bad.

BK, Years ago we had a deep freeze that lasted a couple of weeks and some saltwater places to fish actually froze and it was another huge fish kill. It rebounded after a while but the size and limits were changed to help it rebound faster. Iโ€™m waiting for that to happen again.

You meant millions, not thousands...that's hard to look at.

Seems like some enterprising person would collect them up for a fertilizer project, get the government to pitch in for cleaning up the beaches, that has to smell atrocious.

Very sad. We had a late season blizzard about 10 years ago which dumped over 2โ€™ on local lakes in March. The ice fishermen could smell the stench of the dead fish after they drilled their holes. Some lowered their cameras to see all the dead fish. Apparently the blanket of snow created so much darkness, the weeds died and so did the oxygen producers. Nature is cruel sometimes. A terrible shame to have a resource wasted such as what happened in the Gulf.

Just an FYI. There are spots every fall on some streams in Alaska where the dead salmon are so thick that you sink through their mushy rotted bodies as you walk. In the spring they are gone. The stream is renewed and full of nutrients for the young fry. Nature has a way of cleaning up its own messes. Unfortunately, she can not clean up ours.

The freeze here killed the threadfin shad by the millions in the lakes. Threading shad are not native to Oklahoma & are stocked for forage. They start dying off in temperatures below 50. The wildlife department says they will rebound & I'm sure they will. A
shortage of shad my make catching fish easier for a couple years but can have an adverse affect on fish growth in hard hit lakes.

Millions of these fish are bait food for sport fish and theyโ€™re washed up on a lot of beaches rotting and stinking. I donโ€™t know whoโ€™s going to clean up the beaches but they better do it quick. Itโ€™s warming up here into 70โ€™s and low 80โ€™s. The sport fish generally head for deeper warmer water but Iโ€™m sure a lot of them died too.
When this happened in the 80โ€™s it stretched from Louisiana to Mexico. Billions of fish died. In the shallower bays it was so cold the saltwater actually froze. Iโ€™m waiting to see what the Texas Parks and Wildlife are to change in the fishing regs.

Probably so Sinker. Theyโ€™ve already dropped the Flounder catch to one.
