What size fishing rod should I use for river fishing?

I've recently started fishing again and use a 6ft rod which I've owned since I was a kid so the handle under the reel is a little short. Because of that I've been thinking about purchasing a new rod (one that isn't meant for children) I'm just not sure what length I should buy for river fishing.

I haven’t been fishing as long as most of the people on here, but from what i can tell , a 7 ft rod seems to be the go to size.

If you go with a 7' med hvy you'll be in good shape. Longer rod better casting longer handle better control. Spinning or baitcaster

I agree with a 7' rod. Might want to go to a local outdoors sporting goods shop and try out the medium and medium heavy. While you're there ask what they recommend for your area. I generally prefer lighter rods, but as stated above, what you're fishing for can make a difference. Don't think you'll go wrong with either a med or MH. But you might find one or the other more suited to your liking.

You can use from a 6 foot M/H rod to 7 foot M/H to even 8 foot Heavy Action for flipping and pitching for Bass. but for river fishing and bait and sinker go with 7/12 to 8 foot casting setup.

Are you fishing big heavy water and from a boat or shore? I use 7 to 8 footer fishing from boat on the upper Sacramento depending on what we are after.

It is like learning all over again for you so whichever you pic you can figure it out. Do you want to catch fish or just fish. Ultra light is so much fun but at times a little frustrating when the big ones just grab and run, and run And keep on running. LOL
