I'm Looking At Swapping My 60hp Suzuki To A 90hp Yamaha

I've got a Crestliner 1650 Fishhawk, which is almost 17 feet long (16'-8"), the Suzuki has 50 hours on it and is a 2000, but it runs like a swiss watch. It's able to run at about 33mph, but I would like the extra 10+/- mph that the 90hp should get...plus as good as it runs it is a 20 year old motor, and if it goes south it then has no value toward a swap. Right now I can probably get upwards of $3500 to $4000 for it with the cables.

I found a wholesaler that has old stock brand new for $5900, I have not suggested the idea to my wife yet, that has me consumed with serious supportive arguments, of which I have dozens, but I'm trying to home in on the ones that will matter to her, as well as overcoming the instantaneous explosion of negativity. I already have the "come on, you are not giving yourself a chance to hear the reasons this makes sense" intro.

I don't know, to me this is a no brainer.

No brainer to you may mean no brains left when she gets through with you. LOL. Sound like a great argument to me however!

Good luck. No advise other than take a deep breath , close your eyes and go for it
Like tearing off a gigantic bandaid

When I got my Nitro, I decided to go to the XR6 150. In hindsight, I've had it wide open maybe three times in the 23 years I've owned it. Don't know how old you are, but I took my spurs off a long time ago, and I enjoy cruising at 30 MPH a lot more than fighting waves at 60 MPH. Yea I'm an old fart, hit the big 75 in May. Enjoy the scenery, and save a little gas!

Do whatever. My boat is named No Hurry, It goes about 15mph. 33 is moving right along. I get the idea about its value. Trying to get people to pay you much is another story. I would just run it. Boat Motors especially 2 cycle are pretty bulletproof but do whatever. If you have a reliable set up that is most important part.

Sounds like a decent deal for the motor, but the reason for your rationale is more likely...."Tim the Tool Man Syndrome" to me. Don't forget to practice your grunting before pleading with the wifey.

And your "necessity" to go that extra 10mph faster is......?
(Strap that Yeti down tightly...... crossing another boat's wake can be "enlightening" at that speed....you'd hate to have to turn around to go back for it ! Lol.)

Actually I've referenced different speed things, being on an ocean racer at 180mph, my Audi factory racecar that would pull full 7000 rpm redline at 188mph on a closed circuit track, top end at 8000+ at about 205, my bike that would do a 9 second quarter at 150mph...I like things that go fast but for this fishing boat that isn't required or even what I'm looking for.

That 10mph faster is just enough for me to really enjoy this boat to where I am 100% satisfied with it for some time to come, I actually really like the size and way it handles. The other thing is that this is a 20 year old motor that did a whole lot of sitting with the 40 hours it had on it when I got it. I'd be really happy with a brand new motor I can break in and use the synthetic oil I want to where I know how it has been run. Plus we are planning on going to Berryessa a lot, that is a big lake at about 30 miles long that can be explored on the other ends in a bit more timely manner if the boat can be kicked up on nice water.

I ultimately wanted a 17/18 footer with about 120 to 150 hp, but this is a nice little boat.

Hey brother. I have a 60HP 4stroke Merc on my 18 1/2 Bass Tracker and I believe it's a 2004. It still runs great and the guy I bought it from had hardly used it at all. It was bout 2 years old. It still pushes the boat at 35 mph at WOT and just sips gas. I ,very briefly, thought about goin larger with a 90 or even a 115 which is the max HP the boat is rated for. With the cost of the new motor AND the expense of getting it installed plus the factor of using ALOT more gas, I decided to keep the 60HP. I'm SO glad I did. It lets me troll all day if I want and uses about 3 gals of gas. If I'm runnin and gunnin all around the lake bass fishin and startin and stopping and getting on the trollin motor and bass fishin all day I might use 4 gals of gas. Plus, 35 mph really is fast enough for me.

The Yamaha is on...

the "conversation" was a bit dicey there, some demands and concessions came up that had to be countered, no blood was drawn
