Daiwa BG Size Guide

I will be getting a Daiwa BG very soon. Just deciding on the size. I know the Daiwa's are sized bigger from what I have learned? I mainly fish for larger walleye, and large channel catfish all on rigs. After some reading I have learned the 4000 might be too big. I was now leaning towards the 3000 or 3500. What would be best?

Does your local shop carry them? You could go ask to feel one up there in different sizes.

That is the problem! None of my local shops carry them.

Have you Ever had a Shimano reel? Usually people say daiwas 3000 models are the same size as shimanos 4000 models.

You are correct, 3000 bg is pretty much the same capacity as a 4000 stradic, maybe a touch more.

3500 is the next step up in drag and line capacity which may help. If you are fishing from a boat or kayak you may not need the extra drag or line. If you want to go lighter tackle for a better fight or casting lighter lures then go with a lighter reel/setup.

If you are fishing to catch every fish, need to pull the fish away from structure, cast heavy lures or bait, or want a heavy duty setup go with the 3500 in my opinion.

Idk about up north but I would only worry about line capacity if I was fishing from shore, offshore saltwater, or going light tackle.

I was looking at this! With the 3500 being very similar to the 4000 (just a larger spool). Would it be beneficial for me to go with the 4000 instead? I do all FW fishing.

I don't know your fishery but if you are putting braid on it and or you do most of your fishing from a boat I would say you don't need the line capacity. Using braid puts more line on the reel to begin with compared to Mono and if you fish from a boat you can follow or be towed by the fish which means you should not get spooled.

I am not familiar with the fishing you do but I am way more concerned about other things before line capacity when a fish is on the line.

What size line are you fishing with? I own several BG's, but the biggest I have is the 2500's (also own a couple 2000's). I'm running 8# mono on one of my 2500 series, and lighter braid to leader on the rest. I haven't found a need yet to go larger than 2500 series on fresh water (although I'm not fishing anything really deep). There is plenty of spool capacity on the 2500 series for up to 10# diameter mono/flouro on the type of fishing I do (140 yds of 10#).

I am currently using 10lb. I don't expect to fish anything really deep as well.

I really like the 2500 series. If you want a little more line capacity, then the 3000 is probably a better choice. Unless you really want a huge reel, then I would shy away from the 4000 series.
