I live in Columbus, and it apparently never crossed my mind that there would be steelhead in the Erie tributaries...
Anyone have any advice about coming up there and giving it a try? I see the Vermilion, Rocky, Chagrin, and a few more rivers on the map, so I figure I could start from the East and move Westward. Will my normal trout gear work up there? Any places that I should avoid for being too crowded?

River boss.com is your guide for stream conditions. Steelhead are bigger and stronger than your typical trout. I’d bet they break a 4 or 5 wt rod. They are still a trout. They will take any trout flies. In general just a lot bigger.
Ps. I’m in Columbus too. Check out central Ohio fly fishers. There are plenty of us that make the trek up to steelhead alley.

Ive never understood this concept. If you are breaking rods, your drag is too tight and your tippet is too big. Size the system so that the cheap component breaks first. Its not like 1x tippet is gaining you anything if the rod is weaker.
