This is a versatile hook. I use various sizes in various ways depending on the expected target size and type of bait. Wacky rigs are the go to method when I know I have sand bottom with structure. These hooks also work well in the sticks with a rubber crawdads worked very very slow!

They are 4/0 extra wide gap. Sz 1 or 1/0 is as big as you need for wacky rig. 4/0 is fir fairly big baits

Actually LOVE red hooks !
Retro-fit most of my lures with them, singles, as well as trebles.
Trout, steelhead and salmon all seem to like them, baited or as trailers. I also have some pink ones and some lime-green ones. Wedding Ring lures get bit twice as often when retro-fitted with colored hooks, my buddy and I did some "testing" just for fun. I even painted some hooks with various sparkly greens and blues that I will be trying this year.
Why not ? Innovative lures and customizing old stand-bys are one of the great joys of my fishing fanaticism when I am home instead of on the water....and a great rationalization of the time spent watching a movie or a whole rainy Saturday watching college basketball teams you really don't care about..... you should see the plethora of spoons and spinners that the OEM wouldn't recognize !

I like the red hooks, I put them on my crank baits!
But just the back hook on my crank baits
For some reason the small mouths like it !! ?
Last year my son in law and I were fishing Tullock lake using the same bait except l had a red Tribble hook on the back of my bait I was out fishing him 3 to 1 then he put on a red Tribble hook and started catching more Bass !!
And I'm old school 🏫 !!
Good fishing

Not a fan of the red hooks - Not to say they don't work - just a personal preference thing! As far as the small hooks, they would work great for either or wacky or drop shotting.

I use #1 and 1/0 hooks and they seem to be the right sized for wacky rigs. As Dale mentioned, VMC does have a good wacky rig hook.

Quarterounce,

Those smaller hooks will work fine for wacky rigging. I have used those with good success and honestly no issues.

Ben, regarding red hooks, I do use them with great success, but I do have some idiosyncrasies like that, so I get your perspective. I have never used red with a wacky rig, but my son uses them on the wacky rig all the time.

I do actually prefer red on the Slow Death Rig with crawlers, but use primarily black or nickel on my live bait (sometimes red or blue) and always black or nickel on my wacky and neko rigs.
