Trinity Lake Cats Northern California
Are there any anglers that fish for catfish in Trinity Lake? I’m very interested in where to fish and what bait to use.I have a Hurricane 196 boat, so location isn’t really too much of a problem. Thanks, Silversail
Where ya from Silversail. It needs to be posted in your info.

Thanks Hack, I corrected it in the title. My neighbor on one side was Airborne and on the other side was Special Forces. One of my best friends was also a door gunner. I joined the Coast Guard but couldn’t stay because of colorblindness. I tried though..

Welcome to the Stage. Thanks for your service Silversail. You tried and that’s great. Is the best friend still alive? If so tell him I said Thank you for your Service and Welcome Home. Send him this graphic. God Bless and stay safe.
Yes, Jim Krekos is still kick’n, he lives in Ocean Shores, WA. Jim has a hilarious story about opening up on a python in a tree while landing in a hot LZ. Jim looks, and acts like Walter Matthau and is a really great guy. I will forward your message and , thank you for your service Hack... ever make it up to NorCal, I’ll take you fishing. Starsail
I've never fished Trinity but I've done a lot of catfishing in California. During the day they like deep holes and cover. They come out in the evening to feed. My favorite bait was always fresh cut mackerel, which might be hard for you to find. Chicken livers work well. I take a pair of my wife's panty hose or nylons and cut patches, make a bag to put the livers in, wrap it up with magic thread - keeps the livers on the hook better. I'm not a big fan of bottom fishing - I like to suspend it under a float and let it drift. Light it up at night and you can keep an eye on it. Good luck. And post some photos.
Thanks I will use the chicken livers... I won’t tell my chickens though, they might quit laying. Trinity Lake is a nice lake; however, California state government will not let the water stay at a descent level. Don’t get me started...

WOW!! That is an impressive piece of machinery compared to the simple post mounted 60 we used in Nam. It's a week to spring. Time to get some new fishing photos. Have fun all, but stay safe.

Hard to believe that mini wouldn’t give a Huey problems when it was firing unless they’re weren’t any grunts on board. I think in that pic it’s being used from the aft of a chit hook. IMHO

Do you live in Trinity Center? We used to fish the North end of the lake in late spring with soured clams and cut bluegill. Now we usually fish Shasta up the Pit arm. I'm in Cottonwood.
I live in Lewiston. Shasta is not out of the running for catfishing; however, Trinity Lake is in my backyard. Where wou I put in for the Pit Arm?
Jones Valley to fish the Pit and Squaw arms. I used to fish all the time from Lewiston Bridge down to Browns Mt Road and then on down to steel bridge road. We fished Lewiston Lake this past September and were so disappointed in the lake level and moss and the fishing was horrible, not like ut was in the 70's when it was usually full.
Try the Squaw Creek arm of Shasta just below the Bully Hill mine. We have had great luck with gold mini jigs with a minnow pinned on at the base of humps in about 20' of water.

Try the dam... as close as you can get to the opening. Use a 4’ leader with a night crawler. Weight your line with split shots(above) the leader, so it will bounce along the bottom with the current. Use a worm threader and blow the worms head with a worm blower.... and hang on. Three pounders are common, but 5 to 8 pounders are not unheard of... be sure you have a net. If the current is not running, don’t bother, they won’t bite. I’m kind of bored with trout, catfish are my next task.
