I really want to get into fishing.
How should I go about this I live in NY and I've never ever fished but it honestly looks pretty fun.

Maybe...but New York has a good supply. There are bluegill in the parks though.

Just to try it out, go to walmart and get one of their rod/reel combos for like 30$. Get a 6-7 foot pole, and start with one of the probably zebco spincast combos. Spincasts are easiest to learn to cast on, and very simple. Most people swap to spinning reels later on, or baitcasting reels. But starting out you want that spincast/closed face reel.
You probably have lakes/ponds/rivers and creeks near you that have sunfish species. Those will bite anything. Bass usually need moving lures or live minnows to get their attention. Catfish are probably in most bodies of water near you too.
For the sunfish, get a small pack of hooks, just the aberdeen or baitholder hooks size either 6 or size 8. Not 6/0 or 8/0. Hooks sizes and types are intimidating at first, but just ignore them. You looking for the little hooks. Get a pack of those water gremlin split shot pack, its in a little red pack with a clear top. That will give you some weight to sink the bait down lower. A small pack of bobbers would be helpful for learning (also extra weight lets you cast farther. The lower weight lures are harder to cast).
For the catfish get a bigger size hook. Probably a 4/0 or 6/0. You can get a small pack of larger sinkers too, or just use the split shot.
Just get some nightcrawlers, and for the sunfish pinch or cut the worm into a much smaller piece and put it on the small hook. Put the bobber 6-10 inches above the hook if you got one. Just cast that bad boy out there. Sunfish generally stay closer to shore, but depending on the body of water it could be different.
The catfish use the bigger hook and more split shot and use most of, if not the whole worm and don't use the bobber and just chuck it out there. Catfish generally feed better at night, but can be caught during daylight hours.
Fish can be as complicated or as simple as you want. If you think you might be interested, definitely go walmart cheap stuff to start off. If you don't like it, you aren't out a lot of money. Start searching for sunfish baits and sunfish fishing. That includes like 6-7 different sunfish but they all eat and behave relatively the same. I'm not from your area, but I'm sure sunfish and catfish are in likely every water around you. You could have musky and pike and bass up there too. Start with sunfish though, easiest to learn. Catfish is simple too but not exactly exciting. Its a lot of waiting for them.

New York,New York...sounds so nice they had to name it twice . . . To start just get yourself an inexpensive combo from Walmart, a few different weights and hooks of different sizes, don't forget some live worms right there at Walmart. Google how to make some basic rigs and have at it,my friend. Get out to some decent spot and you may be surprised how much of a blast you may have just experimenting.
