Poem: The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner

Robert J Samples Loc: Round Rock, Texas

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

Wish my dad was still alive. Would like to know if he knew that poem, he was a tail gunner on 24’s. He never talked much about the war. Even after I came back from Nam ect. We didn’t talk war. He passed away at age 49.

In 1979 I had an older man working for me. He wanted to learn to be an aircraft mechanic, He was a B-17 pilot in WW2. He didn't talk about it much, but once in a while he would tell about something that happened. He said that they had to carry Prestone cans on missions to take a leak and he thought it would be a good idea to have relief tubes for him and his copilot. He got with his crew chief and found some relief tubes and got them installed. On the next mission they dropped their bombs and were headed home. He and his copilot were peeing up a storm, he said it was great, then there was a voice on the intercom, "skipper ,skipper, cut it out". The ball turret was covered with yellow ice. When he landed the gunner walked into the cockpit, never said a word and jerked the relief tubes out. That was the end of that.

Yes I agree. My dad didn’t talk much about it. He did have a couple bullets that hit his turret, he was tail gunner on 24s. All he say. “The other guy missed”. I really wished he would of open up more about it. I have his diary and there were pages torn out of it.
