I am a student working on a way to prevent loose bottle caps from getting into the ocean and into the guts of a fish and I have an idea but I need to get a better grasp on how bad the issue really is to know if this is a good path to follow. Thanks :)

1st I would register so we would know whom we are responding to.
2nd what is your idea?
3rd yes to the topic
Yes. I have found plastic debris in freshwater fish. I’m sure if I was looking for it I would find more. Not caps necessarily but sheet/ film type plastics. Cellophane and particulate
I sincerely hope you and others like you can solve this problem for our future before it’s too late.
The problem is not with the materials, but with the people that throw it in the water. Those same people throw bottles and cans in the water, but we don’t hear much about those as they sink and are out of sight. We try to educate, show commercials, even fine some of them. It is not enough. People are lazy and selfish. It is a Global problem. Unfortunately, we can’t control what is done in other Countries. I will leave it at that...
Hmmm...perhaps too much coffee today?
I have not. People are lazy and just do not think. Pack it in pack it out. The Ricky Sitka
No plastic but I found a flat chip of cement in a Northern Pike stomach about the size of a poker Chip and 1/4 inch thick. Didn't do the blade of my electric knife any good at all ! Must have been a chip off the dam and fluttered down and it looked like food to it !

If government wanted to get ahead of recycling and the whole garbage issue they could enforce cradle to grave liability to all products including the packaging.Make the deposit on the bottles/packages $2 not a dumb nickel..Make the grocery stores and fast food restaurants that profit off this pollution responsible like back in the day when you brought back to the store that sold you coke bottles for deposit.Recycling centers don't work. Ok now I'm vented...

Exactly! I throw all empties and trash in my ice chest then empty out before the next trip. I do my best not to litter.
I have not but does anything surprise us anymore?
Never found trash plastic but have have found rubber baits. Cant be good for the fish.
In SoCal in the 80s, a bass was caught at Miramar lake that broke the USIGF for lmb. It was disqualified as the new record holder due to 3 diving weights were found in its gut, fully absorbed into the fishes body.
Now you know.
Unfortunately, this is happening all over...not just the South Pacific. There are reported to be these plastic “islands” all over the globe, wherever the oceanic currents meet and form (in effect) a large “whirlpool “. There may be up to a dozen or more of these collection areas. They focus on the Pacific because we can be pointed out as a contributor...and we certainly are! But, so is most other countries which have shores along the water, or a tributary which leads to an ocean.
Unfortunately, unless the pollution has a return address on it, there is no proof as to the source.
The problem is the people who don’t recycle, or take responsibility for their own garbage. Accidents happen...a water bottle blows out of a boat or a candy wrapper. If I see it, I pick it up...no big effort on my part.
As Spirit has quoted Pogo a few times “We have met the enemy...and he is us!”
Do what you can to do your part and please spread the word!
Have a great day, all!

I haven’t found plastic, but I have found cigarette filters in trout
I fished one spot on the Potomac river. People would come to a big open spot under a train over pass to party. The mess they'd leave was unreal. Biggest problem was all the broken bottles left behind. Take it in full bring it out empty. It weighs less.
