Native, hungry, and pulls above it's weight class- yet it seems to not get a whole lot of love from those who consider them "bycatch."
We're still pre-runoff in central Montana, but flirting with dirty water on the hotter days. Still have some time to get out before we get blown out.

Sounds like those who bad mouth shad and white bass. Yet even the jaded troutsters would have to admit that getting into a spring shad run and catching 70-100 "poorman's tarpon" is pretty darned exciting. They're fiesty. They jump. And they give very impressive runs. The white bass aren't great fighters, but still a 40 fish day has to be fun for anybody that likes fishing, and that is not hard to do and depending on where you live may not require much travel or planning, just knowing where and when they run.

We must not catch the same white bass- they fight better than black bass, other than the jumps. And taste better than crappie.

I will never understand those that hate on whitefish.

To be honest, I have never actually heard anyone ever really 'hate on' whitefish. They are not the most beautiful. Once one is in the net, there is a significant probability there will be several more if the angler does not switch spots and/or flies.
They never stop wiggling, which can make it frustrating to remove hooks from their gummy little mouths. Some people think they smell bad.
I guess they are the fish of my childhood, so I have special spot for whities. And many times, a pod of whitefish has definitely made a potentially horrible day of fishing into a success.

Aren’t they tasty?

No idea. Taste test will happen with the next one I get- working through my week of meal prep right now, so he got a pass.

Is this a mountain whitefish?

Yep. Next time I'll try a taste test, and see if a southern treatment does better than smoking them.

Looks like a freshwater cousin of the Bonefish. If it fights like they do, a worthy adversary.
You can deep or pan fry whitefish. Try to eat them when they are fresh.....day you caught them, or day after.
