Shoulder pain from reeling

I used to fish all the time, like 3-4 days/week for 3-4 hours. Mostly wading in streams. I never had any type of pain or discomfort at all. I haven't been as much lately, maybe like 5x a year for the last few years.

I am experiencing shoulder discomfort/burning/pain after about an hour or so of casting. It's only in the left shoulder, which is the arm I reel with, and I only feel it when reeling. It gets to the point that I can barely keep reeling and really ruins fishing for me.

Any tips how to get past this? I really don't want to give up fishing. Maybe shoulder exercises? I don't know if it's just a muscle issue or something else

Sounds like maybe bursitis. See your doctor.

There are lots of technical innovations out there with gear that make it more comfortable , less fatiguing . But if there is an underlying medical condition like Birsitisbor rotator cuff injury or arthritis , that should be addressed with a medical pro

I had trou9with my right elbow. Couldn't finish a 8hr tournament. Started wearing a compression sleeve seemed to help. Get it checked out. You may get away with a cortisone shot. I've had to in one knee 2 in shoulder 1 in wrist. They work for me n my wife. Plus my 85 yr old neighbor lady. Good luck.

your primary care doctor is an excellent place to start.
depending on your exam, there are a number of non invasive treatments that
can help:
ice
heat
home Physical Therapy
formal Physical Therapy
anti inflammatory medications

and a cortisone injection (request a small needle, lots of lidocaine, and
the shot is not painful at all)

I only refer patients for shoulder surgery once or twice a year for that type
of shoulder pain.

Switch to bait. You don’t have to reel it in as often.

I diagnose this complaint as bursitis or tendinitis. I’m referring you to your family doctor who will likely refer you to an orthopedic surgeon, in interim I recommend Tylenol or your favorite non narcotic over the counter pain medication. You may be looking at some shots of cortisone or arthroscopic surgery to clean up arthritics or torn meniscus in the shoulder socket, or it may require you to learn to retrieve with the opposite hand. Take two Tylenol and call me next week.

Take turmeric curcumin it's a supplement herb and I had pain in my right shoulder (bone on bone) it took all the pain out of my shoulder. If you are on a blood thinner you can't take it. But this stuff works.

Hi Will. I started taking the same thing. Just opened 2nd bottle. As for now it seems to be working. Was taking bio flex for a good while. Body must have gotten use to it. Just wasn't working as well

I recommend using Blue Emo ointment. Available at Drugs Stores - Just rub it on where the hurt is. Not greasy and no order. Worth giving it a try!!!
