Lack of used kayaks on the market. (Rant/advice request)

Damn am I kicking myself.

Last year, this time (pre-pandemic) I was hunting for a used kayak and being REALLY picky and just didn’t pull the trigger. There were tons of them on the market whether it was facebook, Craigslist, offer up, etc. I was hunting for just the right price, good condition, and just the right pedal drive kayak (primarily on the hunt for an Outback). Then something happened, that ate up loads of my time and money, so I put the search on hold since I basically wouldn’t have time to fish/kayak anyway.

Now, I’m back on the hunt for this upcoming season I can barely find ANY used PD kayaks let alone a nice outback. The ones that do pop up are beat to hell, outright broken, or they’re super old. Not to mention, the price!! Every PD kayak regardless of age, condition, or cost as new is suddenly worth $2000 or more?? Part of me just thinks I’d be better off just buying new rather than save $500-1000 for a shoddy old boat.

Do you think used inventory will pick up as season gets closer and People dust of their boats and decide to upgrade? Or is this NOT the year for that since new inventory seems to be suffering as well.

Also, would love to hear what kind of boats your in, and why you like em. I’ve always leaned towards the outback, but that PDL drive in those old towns looks beastly and durable (and fast) and I like that. Will be fishing NJ bays, channels, marshes and maybe some bigger open water.

Since people finally started to take the Pandemic seriously, individual recreational items such as kayaks and paddle boards were snapped up, off the store inventory. The market demanded it, so those who had them increased their prices. Basic Economics (supply vs demand), sorry. My BIL sold his almost 20 year old Hobie for exactly what he paid for it. He wasn’t trying to screw anybody, saw what they were going for and posted it. It was gone in less than a day. It may be worth the money to buy new and get what you want...with whatever warranty they may give you.

A nice setup just came up on my Facebook Central Virginia Kayak Bass Anglers page in February.
It looked like good deal to me. If I had the extra cash laying around, I would have pulled the trigger on this one.

"Radar 135. Has Helix PD rudder with lever steering. Also have pedal steering system new not installed if you want to put a rear mt trolling motor. AirPro Max seat, carbon fiber paddle, lowRance Hook5 fish graph w GPS. Rod holders crate and Wildy Cart."
Deals have not been offered
that often but they pop up every now and then.
This one was being offered at $1500

I'm finding the same problem with Jon boats. New, the stock is very limited. Dealer said he has only 2 12 footers and that is all he can get for the year.

Sounds like buying a kayak is like trying to find guns ammo n a whole lot of fishing gear. I get emails on sales. When you look most of the stuff is out of stock.

OK, here I go. Hope i don't overload, but..... Guys: I'm 76 and sure not the richest around. Don't be a tightass the rest of your life. Man, you don't go round but once. Get what you want before you're too old to enjoy it. I just purchased my third 'yak, a Perception Pescador 12.0. I was getting tired of paddling and decided to pedal awhile. What's a few bucks compared to not gettihg out.
