Bought myself a 10 ft surf rod and a Daiwa BG 5000 reel,
Looking to get into fishing the surf for striped bass in the late spring/early summer.
Anyone have any tips? I kinda know some of the basics but haven’t done this kind of fishing before, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try and gain some knowledge from the sub.

John Skinner is on Long Island and his YouTube channel is thorough (to the point of exhaustive) when it comes to different tips and tricks in the surf. Definitely give him a look. The only thing I can add that others haven’t is change up your approach if things aren’t working out. Duh, of course, but for real, I surf cast on the cape and the lures change pretty frequently every night depending on conditions and any visible baitfish activity.
Tight lines!

SP Minnows and Tsunami/Storm Swim Shads are a great place to start when it comes to lure selection. Tsunamj Talkin’ Popper is another staple. Bucktails are also a staple up here.
Stripersonline is great and even better is John Skinner’s YouTube channel and books. Casting around jetty’s and inlets would be a good place to start looking for spots.
Good luck!
