Does Type of Line Really Matter That Much?
I keep 4 rods on my boat usually rigged with a jig, a spinner, a crank or swim and a finesse worm (Ned, whacky, etc). They are all spinning reels and all with mono. Seems to work ok with all baits. Any thoughts?
My opinion (clearly minority): very little...the marketing gurus are having a field day with us.
I changed over to braid with flouro leader years ago and I’m real glad I did.
Stretch , sensitivity , memory , service life etc
It makes a difference to me. No doubt.
Try it one outfit. If you don’t agree , what ya got to lose ?
Spinning I’d reccomend 20 pound power pro to start. Great all round braid

I guess I read that question differently than you did. I thought he was asking about difference to the fish which I believe is way overblown. Yes it does make a big difference for the items you cited. I also have changed over to all braid, mostly for the reasons you have cited.

Not at all. Mono has worked for years and years. If you like it and it works for you, that's great.
However, for some situations, different line is a little more suited, I feel.
For instance. Sometimes I'm drop shoting in 50+ feet of water. I prefer to use 20# or so braid with a floro leader. Do you HAVE to use braid? Certainly not. BUT, braid has 0 stretch and is helpful in hook sets at that depth. Mono has LOTS of stretch and when you're fishin at 50+ feet you don't get very solid hook sets with it.
That's just 1 example. There are lots of others.
I'll give just 1 more example. When you are fishin in the lilly pads, grass, weeds, trees and such. Braid is VERY helpful in horsin bass/fish out of such things without breakin off.
This is my 61st fishing season and my second season using braid.
Stretch , sensitivity , memory , service life etc all true and I do like.
Wind knots, basically any time braid crosses braid it turns into a death knot. Cutting my finger on my surf rigs is a pain. I like spinning reels. I'm trying a Abu Adiyat Super Strong Casting Trigger on my surf rods this year.
Do fish care? I dough it. It only matters how you wiggle your worm.
I fished mono for a lot of years. Trilene XL was the S#!t back in the day
When I first tried braid it was spider wire. Hated it. Still do
Took a few years after that to try it again. Then a few more years to find a braid and flouro leader combo that worked for me in almost all situations.
It’s tough reccomending braid to someone else. You don’t know their equipment and how they fish.
What works for me may suck for someone else.
After a few seasons of trying different combinations. I know what works for me. Also it’s though to justify putting $30 a spool line on a $38 reel. Don’t make sense.
Some techniques sensitivity doesn’t really come into play. Kinda obvious when a fish hits a crankbait. You could throw just about any line ok for those But for jigs and wacky senkos it makes a difference
To save someone looking into lines and maybe changing to braid and to save the pain and expense I went thru ,
I’d reccomend trying braid , 20 pound for spinning . Not fire line. And to start try power pro. It behaves pretty well and isn’t all that expensive.
Different lines for different applications. Vertical jigging.and Drop shots you want braid. Fishing bucktails for blues or stripers in a current I want mono because it floats and stretches like a giant rubber band, and tires the fish out before they tire you out. I think poppers work better with mono also. I know guys have a lot of success with braid, I’m just saying I don’t think it’s necessarily the best line for every situation. Ideally I’m in favor of having two or more spools for your reels which you can easily switch out whenever you switch tactics kinda like fly fisherman do.

I completely agree. It matters very little, just a marketing ploy to sell more of different lines. Just Sayin...RJS

You are right about having a field day with us, when we go to wal-mart and I stop in the fishing section my wife always says, " look are this stuff to catch fisherman and nothing here to catch fish", more truth to that than I like to admit

I started using braid around 20yrs ago. 85lb power pro for surf fishing. Now all i use is braid n floro. Ben's right about fire line n spider wire hate it. I run 8lb to 20lb on spinning reels. Any thing over 20lb baitcaster. None of the guys i fished with used braid or floro. They was cheap. They'd make a long cast get a bite swing the rod n cuss. Couldn't get slack out in time to set the hook. Only way to feel the difference is try it.
OK, so I have only used braided line for musky fishing aside from one attempt at spiderwire which I hated. I'd like to give it a go once more. What is your method for connecting the fluro leader? Also, on rare occasions I get line twist with my mono..how does braided work in these situations? I have swivels and leaders but I still get that twist once in a while. (I realize a nice baitcast instead of my spin rod might solve that problem) Lastly, what would you recommend for giving it a try? Brand, type, weight? Thanks gang.

I also tried braid when it first came out, I also hated it. At that time the individual fibwrs in braid was larger than now, I flipped and pitched a lot in brush and trees. Whenever I had line hanging over a limb the rough texrure would vibrate the line, sounded like a banjo string. Now the better lines have a smaller fiber producing a smoother line. This helps in casting distance and control. I use braid on spinning reels with a florocarbon leader and alberto knot to connect. Flipping I still use mono or floro, 20- 30 lb test. Look for the smaller fiber in the braid you choose, whatever the brand. Carry good scissors or a sharp knife to cut braid with. Don't throw the waste into the water, it will get into prop shafts and destroy the seals, gas or electric . Keep fishing. DEEJAY

I agree with Ben, 20# braid with floro leader on my bass setups. I also have 30# braid on my new setup for deep fishing for Mackinaw @ 100 to 120ft deep jigging., and if I get to a Striper this spring.
