Best thing ever is watching the excitement of a child catching fish. Yes they get bored but if you have a boat it's more fun for them. My wife n I took oldest grandson around 6. He'd catch a few gills than wants to take a ride. Of course he wanted to steer. He finally got his boaters saftey card. He wanted to run boat. He found stuff on my depth finder i didn't know it had. When we took both boys it was very little fishing but still another day I'll always remember with my grandsons. If you can't enjoy talking a kid fishing i wouldn't want to be you. Enjoy every day you can with your kids n grandkids. I lost my daughter at the age of 45 four yrs ago. What I'd give for more time.

I started that daughter of mine out at Lake Powell at 2 months, then it was ice fishing at 18months. Now she loves to go after king salmon and halibut which is good, because she can drive the boat and fillet the fish. Oh, by the way, she is 46 years old now.

I have a grandson who really showed little interest in fishing up to age nine. He went mostly because we would often take his best friend to play with. They had a great time, although actual fishing fell well short of talking, getting their hands in the water playing with fish on a stringer, and snacking. He even enjoyed netting fish rather than catching them, so he gave me his rod when the fish got close enough to net. For some reason`, when he turned 10, His first question when I see him is "Can we go fishing? He even enjoys practicing in the back yard casting his open face spinning reel like Bapa's. And he is pretty good at it. In the past he wanted to be the fish and run around the yard holding the casting plug. rather than doing the casting. I am not sure why the change all of the sudden, but I do know the fishing trips with little fishing created a fisherman. That is the way it should be.

Bapabear you said a mouthful there. Time with grandkids gives us a chance to be a kid again.

Sorry for your loss Grizzly. I lost my first wife when the kids were 8, 6, 4. Fishing helped us. I remarried a wonderful woman and the kids love her. She has 2 kids. It gets better Griz

I gotta sign off, my grandaughter just arrived. She'll be 3 next month. What is the proper age to start fishing? I need her to put the bait on my hook.

I started my three grandsons about 3 or 4 the oldest is now 20 and they all love to fish. A story about the oldest one when he was first starting and I spent most of my time baiting casting and helping him, after we quit he went around camp and told every one that he caught 7 fish and grandpa only caught 2

Thanks mistred. Really sucks you lost your wife n the kids lost their mom. My 1st wife n i split when my kids were 16 n 13. Like you I found a good woman whi had to girls. Her girls were 5 n 3 when she put him out. I met her in May of 95. Got married in 99 n we're still here. Her girls tell me I've been more of a dad they real dad. Wife n i raised oldest grandson. He had a hearing impairment n young parents couldn't deal with it. He turned out fine. Very intelligent hard worker. Glad life worked out for you n your blended family.

AGE DOES NOT REALLY MATTER, AS LONG AS SHE IS INTERESTED IN FISHING...DON'T FORCE HER TO FISH OTHERWISE SHE WILL BE TRAUMATIZED...

My Granddaughter is 12 now . She started fishing when she was around 5 with her younger brother and sister. . Then had to bait her hook. and help her cast out with a closed face reel . Now she can do it all herself. Puts down and pulls the anchor. picks out spots we should try . She can run my 75 HP tiller if need be . Three years ago she started helping with the fish cleaning. First year scaled all the fish. Year before started taking the heads off and gutting, last year started filleting the fish. She loves fishing. Summer the live up on a lake . They have a shore station where I keep my boat. When I get there she is waiting at the dock , bait ,rods And LIFE PRESERVERS.To look at her she look.s like a Blond Grily Gril, but loves fishing. My son asked her what she wanted for her 13th birthday. She said a fishing boat. She now has a 15 ft 25 HP electric anchor, fish finder and trolling motor . I hope she ask me to go fishing with her this summer .

Last year my daughter filleted a fish for the first time, Pike. It's like teaching a young one to fish, patience. Her older brothers like to fish and eat them but want nothing to do with cleaning them.
