I'm doing jetty fishing for past 2 weeks. I'm don't have much fishing experience. Fishes are eating my shrimps but not hooking on them. I've tried mustad 10 and 12 hook sizes with prawns. They are nibbling on the bait not hooking. Am I pulling it too hard? How hard should the jerk be. When I do it, the hook and weight come out of the water near to my face. What am I doing wrong? I'm using shimano sienna 4000 with Michell Fluid 10 ft rod. The main line is braid 40 lbs and leader is mono.

If you are using size 10 or 12 hooks, you would catch the pinfish or the smaller baitfish. It must be crabs. Try a different location.

Also if you are having actual bites and you see your pole tip bouncing and when you set the hook and your line is flying out of the water you just might be setting the hook a little bit to hard 🙏 my son does this all the time and I have done some coaching with him by standing next to him and letting him know when to set and how hard to jerk 🙏🍀

Try adding a secondary stinger hook or a smaller hook size.

Use artificial lures! Lucky Craft pointer 115’s! Just match the hatch to your local baitfish color wise... Also, you’ll be surprised how close in the fish actually are! Here in So Cal, I catch keeper halibut, big surf perch, and nice sized striper no further out than I can cast! I’ve caught 12lb halibut 10-15’ from shore! So, instead of fishing from the jetty, fish the inside corners from the beach!🎣

If I remember correctly those hooks are pretty small. You may want to change to a larger hook, too as you may be pulling those little ones out before they can get into some lips

I use #8-#10 hooks for small stocked trout. You want to go up to #2-2/0size for any decent size saltwater fish.

Without a location it's hard to tell what species you're fishing fir. Sheepshead and tog are both notable bait stealers, as are pinfjsh and bergalls

Could try Carolina rig , or similar setup to keep the bait off the bottom where crabs can get it?

use 0/1 or 0/2 circle hooks, don't set the hook, let the fish eat and pull your line and then start reeling

add a small float to keep your bait above the crabs on west coast. It will not help on east coast as blue crabs swim. They are sneaky little buggers!
