Cheap, accurate way to measure water temps from the bank?

I was hoping for suggestions on thermometers what I can easily use from the bank to test water temps. Something more accurate than say, a meat thermometer would be helpful.

In Michigan, it's TOUGH from the bank until water hits upper 40s. I don't want to waste my time this year until I'm confident the fish will be up shallower.

My first depth finder didn't show temp. I found a small unit that did. It took dlb a battery if i remember right. Been 15 yrs. It had. a fairly long wire with sensor. I'd just drop sensor over the side. Best thing about it i could drop it as deep as it would go then slowly pull it up to get reading at different levels. You may still be able to get something like that

Just thought about it. You could use a pool thermometer

Remove your left shoe and sock, roll up your pant leg and stick your foot in.
Each second you can keep it in is 10 degrees you add to 0 Fahrenheit....
4 seconds = 40 degrees

I have a digital thermometer that is trigger operated and your can get a good surface reading up to 30 feet away. For trolling I use a thermometer that reads temperature every 5 feet and records it. We drop it over and let it out 100 feet to get lake temperatures for trout.

I know what you mean sloopy. I got my 1st boat 17' 1981 glastron. Had a casting deck in bow. Wasn't pretty but it didn't leak.n it ran well. Got a depth finder for under$100. I had to improvise. I'd go to deep creek lake in western md. I see you're in buck co so you may know where it's at. Big $ bass clubs would fish there. Alot of them acted like ### cutting other guys off running wide open. I'd let them do their thing then I'd go behind them work the docks and catch fish. If you can fish a $100,000 rig won't make you one. I live outside of Waynesboro in south Franklin co. 1 mile from the Pa Maryland line

thanks Grizz I didn't know about deep creek I have been searching for lakes in Pa. I am sure one would need the Md. fishing license . this is year 3 with my boat only went to the Barnegat bay 2 x last yr. the restrooms were closed at nockamixon lake where i fish as well so i didn't get out much . my boat isn't very new either , I picked up a v hull 16 ft. 97 starcraft w/a 20 hp. merk on a trailer for 16 hundred no leeks and runs great added the hummingbird that has thermometer but that is surface temp so I use the old pool thermometer to get a reading below , perhaps we will run into each other sometime , name on my boat is Sloopy , stay well and wet a line !
