Went out with a friend and caught a few, no keepers. Probably a dozen mangroves, 6 sheep heads and 1 puffer who thought he was bigger than he was.

Sounds like fun. Did you keep the sheephead? They are good to eat. How about the Mangrove? What are your size and creel limits? Thanks.

That is not a Northern Puffer, what is it. Here I had been throwing away pain in the butt Puffers but a guy asked me
if I ever ate them. I decided to take his advice and try a couple and they are beyond outstanding simple to clean with the help of an on line video and so worth keeping. I'll never throw one back again.

I hear people saying how good Pufferfish taste, I don’t think I’ll ever want to try it though. Pufferfish are extremely poisonous. They contain a few different toxins that there is no antidote for. The toxins are contained in their internal organs, their blood, brain, and even their skin. They can release the toxin in their skin when they feel threatened or attacked. You can be affected by the toxin by just holding the fish in your bare hand when you are trying to remove the hook. Check out this article. Eat Pufferfish at your own risk.

Sheep heads have to be 12”, one was 11.5”. All mangroves were around 8 in.

We catch them that big in the marshes around Fourchon. Too small but would be perfect eating size if they were legal. The legal size are caught offshore at the close rigs, 12” and up and 10 per man per day. No size limits on the sheephead but we don’t keep anything under 12”.

Northern puffers like we have here have no toxins. We have a very cool cleaning method also. There are puffers in Florida you should stay away from but I have eaten lots of them from here. You know another fish that has beautiful white meat is a sea robin. If they have a little size I take them home also. I did some on line research before I started keeping them to make sure. Northern puffers have very distinct markings so you can't mistake them.

I don't through them back either. I have posted this before that I go to West Palm Beach every Labor Day weekend and fish with my brother in law. Three days fishing I bring back 100 to 200 puffers. The only thing in them that is poisonous is the liver. It's black and sticks out like a sore thumb. Cant miss it. The locales down there call them todies.
