This story was related to me as being a true story during the early days of a tropical foliage nursery in Pharr, Texas. The owner was the grandson of the founder of this nursery. It had grown over the years and had expanded to the point of having two different locations. The first one had been encircled by the city proper, so there was another one of approximately 20 to 25 acres south of town.
In the 1920’s and 30’s before there was gasoline powered tractors to do the work, the owners would use a donkey to plow and pull a wagon and do those things where extra power was needed.
However, in the fall as winter approached, the original owner refused to pay for the feed necessary for this animal. He would give orders for the Mexican workers to dig a large hole on the property and when they had dug it to a satisfactory depth, he would lead the donkey up to the rim, shoot the donkey in the head, and have the worker cover him up.
It was rumored that in certain cases when a worker was being difficult, the original owner would give him a shovel and tell him to dig a hole. This order was quickly understood, and the chastened worker would get the message quickly. Just Sayin…RJS

Sounds like ‘read between the lines’. It works.
Kind of a drastic way to get rid of a jackass. These days there would be a lot of holes.

We got wall to wall Jackasses!
I think(?) I was once told that Jackasses would keep other livestock protected from coyotes. Does anyone know whether that is true?

No argument with that, but I'd prefer to use it in the daytime and sleep at night!
