What typical bait do you use to catch carp? Tend to fish on the mouth of a river where a whole school of 10+ carp can be seen. I’ve tried store bought bait and corn so far and not even a bite. Any other suggestions?

Try a spear gun. More fun.

I’ve never caught carp on anything but nightcrawlers....but then again I’ve never intentionally caught a carp. They sure put up a fun fight though.

I might have to give those a try. Thanks!

I typically use bread. Just pack it right around a trouble hook.

Wheatie balls.
Grab a big double handful and crush them some, dip into the water you are fishing in and work it into a doughy texture. Mix in some flavor extract, vanilla, strawberry if you wish, plain can work just as well.
Let it set up and dry some while you are cleaning up and getting tackle set. Pinch it off and form it into a gumdrop like shape around your hook with the flat side facing your line/leader. Make sure that the hook is just covered with the dough so they don't feel it as they suck it up.
Sit back and enjoy the trip and fun that's coming.

I haven’t fished for carp since I used to with my dad as a kid, but he used to make a “mush ball”.
Get a cup or two of corn meal and mix in about half of that of flour and slowly add water until it becomes a firm dough. Make it into a ball, then wrap it in an old thin rag, tie it, then boil it for 15-20 min. Let it cool then work in some vanilla extract or molasses or Karo syrup.
Put it in the fridge overnight (keep in the wet rag) and take it to use to form dough balls around your hook.

Two cups of MASECA (corn tortilla mix).
One can of cream corn.
Mix really good so the MASECA is saturated with the cream corn juices. No dry spots.
Use a number 6 treble hook tied directly to the line. The maseca acts as the weight and the bait.
Work the MASECA into a 3/4 inch square and press your treble hook into it and then squeeze it firmly around the treble hook. It doesn't really matter what shape it is just so long as the hook is not exposed.
Cast it out and let it settle on the bottom and put your rod down. Give the reel handle a couple of cranks and let the bait settle again and just watch the Slack line where it touches the water.
When it jumps that's a fish picking up the bait but when it takes off or moves that's a fish moving with the bait. Set the hook. it's best to fish with the wind in your face too because it pretty much draws the slack out of your line. Hi-vis line helps that is not necessary either.
Fish like this with some 6lb line on an ultra-light rod and reel is lots of fun. But ultimately any rod and reel combo will work just so long as your lines not too fat, like don't use 50 lb mono. The 30 lb braid is okay and anything between 8 and 12 lb mono is fine too.
Since this is pretty much a corn only product it will ferment so don't leave it in the sun and refrigerate it. Kind of like nightcrawlers.
I have caught monster carp on anything you can imagine. Lures, live minnows, flies, any type of corn or dough. In the past year I have caught more monster carp on 1/8 ounce jigs baited with two inch rubber baits. I like to fish 4 to 8lb line. Just make sure you have enough of it on your reel when the carp makes a 100 yd. run. This is a good fish to learn on. Have fun.
I use a large thing of old fashioned old fashioned oatmeal mix with 3/4 bottle of Kari syrup you can put in a half bag strawberry jello for some reason they love that flavor mix well wait about 15 minutes after mixing for absorption check consistently you may need more Kari or oats when you find your consistency ball up and throw a bunch where you are fishing then put corn on your hook and mold the mixture around it and throw out or use a hair rig and put corn on hair and your mixture on hook good luck
