Went out and could not look at the sun. It was so bright I thought we were having an eclipse. Called everybody I could to look at the sun. All said whats going on. Pulled up my app called Sky View to see what was near the sun. This is it. Jupter, Saturn, Venus and Mercury were all behind it. If you look close at the pictures you can see a red ball and a smaller green ball to the left of the sun. I think that was Mercury and Venus. Last picture is from Sky View App.

I took the pictures at 5:20 PM. Sunset was at 6:04. The pictures looked like it was after sunset but it was bright daylight.

That's crazy, it was cloudy and snowing most of the day here oh yeah and the wind. Sun didn't shine much here today. Thanks for the pictures and explanation.

Have never had black sky 45 minutes before sunset, Gordon. Nor have I tried to take a picture of the sun directly.....hmmm.

Definitely several quirks with this thread, including your camera/phone's capability to faithfully reproduce, apparently.

The sky was as blue as could be. Don't know why the picture came out so dark. Held phone up and snapped. Couldn't look at the sun even with sun glasses on.

Very unusual. I think the red and blue colors are dust on the lens. Cool pictures, but the circumstances of the planets don’t make sense. Most planets won’t get between the earth and sun and cannot cause an eclipse. Only mercury and venus, too small for an effect. Others would be so dim in the background to be impossible to see if the sun was in view. I have that SkyView application. It is great, but it exaggerated the size to help identify the objects. Again great pictures, but no easy explanation as to what was going on.

Go to http://www.space.jpl.nasa.gov . You can put in the date and time to see the view from Earth. It will show you the alignment of the planets. Or, you can ask it what Saturn looks like when viewed from Jupiter. It's the neatest thing I ever saw. NASA JPL Solar System Simulator.
