My wife and I just bought a boat and need to learn how to fish for crappie on Lake Sam Rayburn. We have fished in southern LA a lot but now live close to Rayburn. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks. Padre Island sounds like a good place to fish. We were there 10 years ago but not fishing. What do you catch on your fly rod down there ?

GOOD. Water stained; 56 degrees; 1.53’ low. Largemouth bass are good as spawn draws them close to creek channels and vegetation with crankbaits, worms, and spinners. White bass are good on minnows, and small cranks also moving to vegetative banks. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs

Thanks. I have an old friend that lives in Swollen. Where do you find crappie?

Use your electronics to find them stacked up on brush piles.

I watch a lot of videos made by Greg Fenn (Camoriver Guide Service) who specializes in crappie fishing on Big Sam. I got the feeling he is the kind of guy that will give you some kind of help. I don't know if that's true or not; you may have to charter a trip. Otherwise, get on Youtube and watch a bunch of his videos.

The most important advice I can give you is: beware of the wind and open water. Rayburn is a big pond. I fished there a lot in the early 70's while it still had standing timber and it was dangerous then. I'm lucky to be here today after a few instances I got into with the wind, waves, and a small boat.

Good luck. Post some pictures!!!

Great advice. Thanks. There are still some y’all trees that stick up just above the water depending on the level. Thanks again.

Hot now , I have had lots of success with deep, diving crank baits in 15 to 20 feet. Clear water try the old chrome sides with blue backs . Electronics is the key . Ten inch worms natural shad colors also work.
