Folks
We're down here in Satellite Beach Florida for a couple of weeks enjoying the sun and getting out of the cold and snow that is New Hampshire this time of year. There is a canal near the house we are renting that connects to the Banana river, and it has an array of fish in it, as well as a bunch of Manatee. During my daily walk today I noticed a bunch of Tilapia (maybe Blue Tilapia) in the canal starting to build nests and all that happy stuff, so I got to thinking. I've had pan fried Tilapia in the local Mexican restaurant and it was very tasty. So, my question to you is what bait should I use to catch a couple of these guys for supper. I'm not trying to drive the species into extinction, I'm just kinda hungry. Dig?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Never fished tilapia but I would imagine they are similar to bluegills as far as catching
Try wax worms , meal worms, crickets or plain ole red worms
Let me know it this works. For future reference.
That's what I was thinking a well. We'll see who else jumps into the conversation and has some advice.
Seems a lot of people like shrimp. I started using shrimp tails last year from shrimp cocktail just to add to my other baits. We love pics to 😁 tight lines Harry
Tilapia are vegetarian its hard to find a bait for them get a 4 to 5 foot cast net from Walmart practice throwing it on dry ground and go get them they're tropical invasive species and the state of Florida wants them out, catch as many as you can filet them cut out the red line in the middle and you're good👍
This on came from the Mother Ship, and I've lost my decoder. Can anyone help me out over here?

I would never eat store bought or restaurant Tilapia. Many come from Asia where they are fed chicken waste.
If they are vegetarians ,how about a piece of Lettuce on a small hook laid right on the bed ?

I saw a documentary once about the farm raised Tilapia. Hundreds of them are in the same container. They aren’t fed anything because they eat all the fish poop💩. I haven’t eaten one since.

First time I ever saw tilapia a guy was catching them where a small stream runs into the Caloosahatchee River near LaBelle. I ask what they were and what he was catching them on. He replied that he was using moss from the bottom of the stream for bait. I gathered some moss and went home with fifteen nice sized fish that were very good in the pan.
Find real thick price of green slime algae like on rocks in the water put it on a hook that works we had alot at wastewater plant I worked at in Orlando watched a coworker catch them they are all over down here

How come Florida wants to get rid of them? Sounds like they are helpful, if they eat algae. Just saying :)
