at least with a spincast, if it happens, you can just flip the bail and pull it off the spool and keep fishing(not as well because you lost a shitload of line but eh).
i bet he's got loops that are in the gearing between the reel and the frame...

We use bait casters when casting for musky. It doesn't go unnoticed by others in the boat if you get a tangle. It usually brings a smart comment like "what's going on over there or what are you doing?" A common answer is "there's nothing to see here. Just a little professional overrun."
