Chopping down Rio DC Bonefish

I recently got a free 9wt Rio DC Bonefish. It's about 3/4th of a line weight to heavy for my RPLXi 890. Has anyone ever tried chopping off a few feet from the front of the line to modify the grain weight? It should work in theory but I worry that the combination of 9wt line and no front taper would spook fish. Should I attach some thick mono to the front to solve this?

Chopping off the end will make the problem worse, not better, because the end is thinner and thus lighter for a given length. About the only thing you can do is use less line when you start your cast and then learn how to shoot the head to get the distance you need. Maybe you can trade it with someone who needs a heavier line.

Not at all sure how you made the determination you state, but I agree.... chopping off won't help. Simply "underline" it with an 8wt or even less.
The configuration of the line matters as well. A "wt. forward floating" is quite a bit different than a "double taper", a shooting head, or a sink tip line. Each has its own excentricity that affects cast ability. I would load the reel with a different line before I would do any cutting. Good luck !
