I have a 7' Fenwick with 20lb Sufix braid and a 6' Rhino with 12lb Berkley trilene. First 10 or so cast I am hitting 60 - 70 feet then it goes down to a lucky if I hit 20 feet. Happening on both rods. I have changed the line on both and same problem. Sure would appreciate a cure if anyone knows the answer.

Put the 12# on the 7' and use 6# or 8# on the other. 20# is too heavy, unless you regularly hook into really big fish or frequently snag on obstructions.

20 lb braid is fine, what reel are you using?

Penn with the braid and a Intrepid with the trilene

both are spinning reels? I'm sorry but I have no idea why that would happen. I'm sure the line size has nothing to do with it.

Thanks anyway Basscat. Both worked great for a few days at the beginning of the season and then downhill from there

Just out of curiosity how full are the spools on your reels? If only partially filled it may be that once the line is wet it is hanging up on the lip of the spool and that is affecting your casts. Just a guess.

I agree, sounds like when the line is getting wet it is catching on the spool. Try using a really smooth mono like spider wire. Spider wire mono is very slick and casts extremely well even when wet where some braid lines will absorb water and be more sticky. If you need to use braid try to use braid that has a slick coating. The only other thing I can think of is make sure you have enough line on the spool since when it gets under the half way mark on the spool it binds up more when it's coming off.

IT does not matter how full the reel is, the problem happens within a 1/8" of the lip to 1/4" and less.

I am leaning towards replacing the Sufix brand and thinking of trying the Power Pro braid and drop down to a 10 lb.

Good idea on the spider mono. I made myself a note of that. Thanks

20 lb. braid is like 6 lb. mono so that should not be a problem.
I would make sure you have enough line on the reels.
12lb. is not to heavy either....what weight Lures or sinkers are you using?

Been using the Z-Man lures with a red eye 3/16 jig. Does not matter where the line on the reel is from 1/8" from the lip to 1/4" and below same results. Going to try the 10lb Power Pro line Thursday. Initial try from the dock was more distance than I expected, but wait and see what hours on the water will do.
