Hawaii Shoreline Questions

Hello all, Moved to Hawaii a little bit ago and just recently decided to pick up fishing again. I don’t have a boat so I’m stuck fishing from shore. I’m having a lot of trouble getting my line out deep enough to where there’s fish big enough to take my hook. I’ve been spear fishing out here for a few years, so I know where the fish are. Been using a 12 ft rod 3 and 5 oz weights and frozen squid. Also have tried my little bass rod with top water poppers and slow sinking lures. So far I’ve only caught one fish and it was on the slow sinking lure. I fished for many years with my dad in Florida, and usually did pretty good for myself, so this run of bad luck is making me feel like I’m doing something totally wrong. Any advice for a struggling angler?

I'm with Mike. I fished Hawaii years and years ago, but we were surf fishing and we caught some fish. Don't remember exactly where we were. Surely there's surf fishing in Hawaii? Which island you on? I was on Oahu when I was fishing.

Carry your bait out by kayak, canoe, etc. drop it offshore that way. Or go the drone route.

Hi Crispy, what Island are you on,locals have different styles on each island, get a Hawaiian fishing calendar with the moon phases. GT's are all over the islands and you can land a 100 liberal from shore, use one piece rods, in the 14' to 15' range, keep your bait away from the bottom, white tips and morays are there, learn about sliding live bait fishing! If you're in Hilo on the Big Island go to Tokugawa fishing tackle store , or J Hawaiian in Mountain View talk to them . Also plugs , lures and plastics work great in the islands, have a bait pole for catching your live bait, tight lines, Best is to hookup with a local fishermen and you should be fine. Good luck.

Jim Rizzuto has published some books called Fishing Hawaii Style. You'll find some good tips in them.

Drill a hole in an alka seltzer. put a large lug nut on a short leader. on the other side of the seltzer attach your fav bait ( im a sucker for a small octopus ). Fling it out where the big ones are. Seltzer melts attracting fish then melts
away. You'll have one on in side of a minute.
That fails. Move to Florida.
