Went fishing at Lake McSwain Ca. today fishing really slow guy next to me caught this strange color rainbow trout. No its not a Golden Trout, red and orange anyone ever seen this before?
AKA GMO ...just throwing that out there. From the looks of that tail may grown up in a cement pond.
The first palominos all started with a hatchery in West Virginia and have been selectively bred ever since. Some guys scout them out before the first day due to their visibility and become obsessed with catching them. Personally, they creep me out a bit.
Pot-o-gold rainbow...anything inside out of the ordinary? They get that color from eating goldfish, so I been told.
I don't think it's a palomino, not yellow enough. I think it's an albino. Surprised it lived long enough to get that big. But then again, the tail says it's a planter. Raised on a farm somewhere.
Looks like some sort of a hybrid with RED Side Trout somewhere in the Genetics. But I must be very honest I am not a fish or wildlife biologist. I think it could have some yellow trout in it but look at the gill plate and notice the red splotch is on other side of gill. Looks neat. That would be one to take to local Photo place and get some prints off phone to frame it. I love seeing something out of the ordinary. Maybe has some albino in the bloodline too.
Red Side Trout have the very obvious red stripe along lateral line like that fish does. Maybe can contact local Fishing Biologists or the State Fish and Wildlife and get an answer.
The tail fin is tell tale sign it has been raised in captivity at some point or crowded to be so chewed up. Unless it has been spawning. If you are going to clean it to eat or harvest you get more information once you gut it. Color of eggs if female may be an indicator. With some research hopefully you can figure it out.

Few pictures of Red Side Trout. That fish may be Golden and Red Side Hybrid. Yellow and Red Side. Grandpa might be a Steelhead Grandma maybe a Golden. Mom a Golden Steel then still gotta figure out where dad was from. What color was the meat? That is another indicator of genetics and diet as well.

That's the Amador Gold hybrid being raised at Lake Amador... it's being called lightning trout, there are big ones they are stocking Amador with, they look like they fight really hard. We saw a guy catching one Sunday before last.
They look like huge gold fish swimming around, they are easily seen under the water. Also they look like a very red salmon colored meat, I'm looking forward to catching some to try out.
It is always nice to take the guess work out of guessing. Thanks Wood Gooroo. I like getting to the bottom of things. Thanks for solving the Mystery.
