Best Crappie lake in San Diego County.
For either numbers or size, what is your favorite lake for crappie!
25 years ago El Cap was a great crappie lake. Haven't lived down there since 97, so I don't know any more. I've mentioned this before on here, used to be a preacher from Chula Vista who'd go over there on a Saturday and catch enough crappie for a fish fry for his congregation on Sunday. Claimed he used a Mitchell 300 on a fly rod and yellow mister twisters.
El Cap was great, but I haven't fished it in over 10 years. Henshaw use to be good for numbers. Any others?
!We were hoping you were going to tell us!
Haven't fished for Crappie in many years, but it use to be a toss up between Otay Lakes and Lake Jennings. Just from the latest local blub, I would say Lake Jennings would be your best bet. Goggle Jennings and check out the latest fishing report! Let us know how you make out!
Regards,
Georgio
Sounds like the good Minister might have had a little "Devine" guidance going for him!
I remember reading an article in the paper about him. If you drove by the church there was a sign out there advertising his fish fry. Asked folks to bring a side dish to share. Went over there a couple of times on a Sunday afternoon - at least a hundred people showed up and there was plenty to go around. Lots of Mexicanos - the side dishes were outrageously good.

In the 90s we caught a lot of small crappie at Sutherland east of Ramona on artificial jigs and spinners and white go getters. I caught a 3-1/2 pounder on a live shiner fishing for bass at El Cap at the north end of lake, also a 5lb bass that day. It was a miserable wet day and the lake over flowed that night and I think they closed it for a while. I think that was in the late 90s. I quit fishing the lakes and now I fish SD bay south of the bridge and never catch less than 12 fish in 4 hrs. Best day ever out there was 176 for 2 of us, all on plastics. Mostly spotted bay bass. I wouldn't eat anything from there but some do. Larry W.
Try San Vincente Resovoir. Lake has some big bluegill, red ear, crappie as well as LMb and catfish
Lake Henshaw is like a puddle compared to what it used to be. There were some good crappie in there.
I have seen on a different forum some REAL big crappie coming from Lake Hodges. Three pound plus!
I always felt Henshaw and Cuyamaca were good for numbers, but lacked anything approaching slab size fish. We took a barrel of miniature size crappie from Cuyamaca and planted them in Chollas lake, but I never saw what the results of that were.

Lower Otay. Boat is best for accessability. Roundabout road gives access to bank spots or those innertube float thingies.
