There are a lot of snags where I go fishing, so I use 40 LB Braid for my line. The reels I use have 20 LB drag, so I am not worried about the line breaking as much as loosing the rig. I wrap the line around a smooth piece of metal and pull on it to free the snag. I attach the sinker to the rig with lighter Mono so it breaks free first to try and keep the rig.
Don't hold the reel spool pulling on the snag, I don't care what the videos show. You don't want the line to dig into the line on the spool of the reel. That WILL cause a "POP" cast. Keep the rod straight and pointed at the snag, don't break your rod for a snag. But that's just my experience and watching others learn the hard way. Tight lines and good fishing.

I use braid, 50#. Some folks use 20# flouro . They say the fish can see the braid, and they say the fluoro sinks faster. To me, neither argument makes sense. The weight of the Alabama Rig sinks pretty fast all by itself, and the fish can pretty much see the mass of wire used in the A- rig, so the visibility/ Invisibility of what type line used is a moot point. But if I were to use fluoro, it would be at least 15#, but no more than 20#. The diameter of the fluoro starts taking up considerable space on the spool of your reel as test strength increases, decreasing casting distance and less spool line reserve if you break off and have to re- tie. If you use fluoro, try to get line that has a high abrasion resistance. Hope this helps.
