Buy a good reel first and then you can buy a cheap but decent rod but the Black Max Combo is just cash money down the drain.

lews speed spool fs baitcast reel

LFS is a good reel, I just bought one to put on a StCroix. But the kid has $100 to spend on a combo and wants to fish, not sit home with a new reel while he tries to save more money for a rod.
I've been throwing spinnerbaits and chatterbaits for nearly 10yrs with a Black Max, and it still works fine.
Everybody keeps trying to up-sell these beginners, half of which will hate Baitcasteing an go back to spinning rods. If they have lot's of cash, that's fine, but when they don't they don't.

I bought my grandson the black max combo. He really enjoys it. I think for a starter, it’s a good combo.

I just gave my brother an old black max I had in storage.
I remember it was ok. Bigger baits seemed to be a non issue. By jig I’m saying 3/8 spinnerbait and the like

Obviously not my first choice but for a $100 combo it will work ok. Definitely something decent to learn on. And it will absolutely catch fish.

I can’t think of a better low budget set Up
