Best fishing set to keep in car

I need to figure out what to buy to keep my fishing gear in my car (Honda CRV) I typically keep one of my back seats folded down and a tackle box but I’m considering getting a telescope rod so it’s more contained. I’ve been eyeing the Mouhike rod/cases on Amazon since I mainly do lake/pond fishing. Thoughts or recommendations?

Lovely_Carnation: Well, Lovely, I am assuming you are a female. Congratulations on being a serious enough fisherman to take advantage of fishing at the spur of the moment and whim! I've done that for years.

I don't think it matters much, my gear was ordinary bass tackle, either bait casting or spinning tackle. Pay more attention to your lure selection; such as a couple of top water lure, such as a frog, etc.; and a couple of diving lures and also perhaps a ned rig with plastic worms, or a Carolina rig with jig/plastic tails.

Suggest you have a compact (small) box, one you can tuck into your waist band out of the way, but handy and always carry at least one knife! Good luck and post some pictures of your catch. Just Sayin...RJS

L_C I was tired of hauling around my big tackle box so I bought a small Plano shoulder box. It had 2 Plano 3600 boxes that you could put an assortment of lures. I added one more 3600 box to it. When I’m catfishing I’ll switch out one box for one setup for catfish. Mrs rutinbuck bought me 4 more. It has 3 zippered pockets for other gear and a place for my multi tool. I prefer one piece rods but I have a two piece spinning rod and reel that works well for tight placed. When put together it’s 7’ long. This may not work for you but you could always grab one of those 3600 boxes and go fishing with just it.

Pre COVID I traveled two weeks a month for work. I have travel rods I take with me, and when home I usually keep one in the truck. I have the Okuma Citrix four piece rods and love them. If I'm only taking one rod I take one of the spinning rods. I think it's more versatile than the casting rod because I can throw small spinners, finesse jigs, worms, drop shot, etc. I've caught several species all over the country with them.

I am not a fan of telescoping rods. Wouldn’t a 6’-6.5’ rod fit nicely in your Cr-V? I put 7’ rods in my Honda Crosstour. I would also suggest you consider keeping all your tackle in your car all the time as there are just too many break-ins. Tight lines.

I have a Tesla model Y and the Frunk contains most of my fly fishing gear including the rods in their case. This way I’m always ready.

This is my go everywhere, everyday setup. Vehicle dependent, obviously. But headliner rod storage is key for me. A simple day pack could carry all you would need for a random hole you may stumble upon.

Keeping any and all your tackle hidden in the trunk makes a lot of sense, otherwise you are risking a break in and theft. Now you have the problem of insurance, repairs and a lot of wasted down time.

Also, if you are travelling, be careful about fishing in other states without a license. Just Sayin....RJS

I drive a Kia Soul with passenger seat down. Surprisingly I can get 32 rods in it, including 8 1/2 footers. No room for passengers, but I'm always happy with my rod selection.

Actually there are good reason why not to do that .one and this is something I heard is that the heat in the car affects the line .what it does I,m not sure but I would think weakens it.second someone may want your gear more then you.

L_C, the telescope rods will fail faster than advertised. I've had several with no joy. I keep a 7' two pc in the truck at all times after ice out. I wont suggest tackle options but the box is the simple single shelf cheapo. Easy to carry and holds my favorites. Tight lines! Tom

The Okuma Citrix rods are four piece and fish incredibly well. Lightweight and balanced. They come in a nice tube that travels well and fit in a 25" roller bag for flying. I fish braid to leader so I can fish any species that's available where my business travels take me.
