Welcome to the Forum, greentime. The birds won't even eat them here in So. TX. I know of some people that will eat them, one time.

people def eat them and I think they are pretty much the same thing. I just personally have never enjoyed the flavor of catfish. I've tried freshwater and salt, I'm sure there is a different taste but I was not impressed with either flavor, both fried.

Look up a chile fried catfish recipe. You cook chile peppers into oil or batter and you will want to eat them more than salmon and halibut.

that's alright, any fish that requires work to cover the flavor (cat n bass) usually ain't for me lol. I used to be a salmon n lk trout addict in the N.W. but now in Florida I'm hooked on snook and sheepshead with a few varients of snapper thrown in :). More than happy to point people were to catch the slimy buggers if that floats their pallet better ;).

Saltwater cats aren't worth taking home. I like fresh water cats though.

I have never tried to eat hardhead cats. When the birds stuck their noses up to them, that was enough for me. I have talked to people that have tried them and they said that they were bad!

flyguy if you will pm me I'll send you some of my hot or sweet smoked hardhead catfish. Ask Spiritof27 if they are bad or ask RJS. I smoked up a special batch for RJS that was low salt. I only did that for him. The hardhead catfish are good eating and the sail cats are great eating. I primarily smoke the hardhead cats and marinate them in Franks Original Hot Sauce and salt or the sweet I marinate them in Honey, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce and Soy + salt both are smoked with Cherrywood. I vacuum seal. I personally don't eat hot so the fish that are hot are for friends & relatives but the sweet I eat and save for myself.

Nobody likes a Hardhead, especially me. You do know if you get stuck wipe the slime on your wound and it stops the pain. It works here in the Gulf.πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Thanx Hack, hopefully I won't ever need that info but good to know. I learned my lesson on their spines when I first got here less painfully, had one stick clean through my white water "puncture resistant" inflatable kayak. Did not make me a happy camper that day but learned a valuable lesson.

I have to call BS on the slime treatment. Google it! There is not anything about it that is healthy or good for you. Over the years I've tried all of fixes. The best is Hydrogen Peroxide and hot water. The picture is a recent encounter and the treatment was Hydrogen Peroxide on scene and hot water at home an hour later. The pain was gone in minutes after the hot water.

ouch that looks painful, and I must admit peroxide n hot water sound much more pleasant than fish slime lol.
