Bass fishing with my grand daughter

My grand daughter was home for the holidays and wanted to go fishing. Last Wednesday we found weather and time in agrement and went to the neighbor's pond. In about 45 minutes we caught 5 bass and had a lot more strikes. No records for sure but they were eager. The pond is overstocked so we kept them all for a fish dinner. The fish are small for their age and have no fat. The population of bass is too high and they are having trouble finding enough food. We will continue helping reduce the problem.

Nice catch Herb, I hope the GD had fun. If someone has to thin out the population, it might as well be you.

She did have fun. I was glad she caught the most fish, 4 to my 1 - the smallest one!

Nice mess there Herb. If they get too overpopulated they start getting a hump in their backs and eventually die. I used to fish a pond like that and they already had a hump. My brother in law and I use to fish it together. Fish on Herb. Help them out.

No we were using spin casting tackle. Nothing too fancy, just cheap stuff but it works well. I used Cane pole in my handle because that was the way I started fishing many years ago. We were using plastic worms and casting around a lot of weeds. I remember my Grandmother catching small mouth bass from a creek using a cane pole with minnows for bait. She was the most patient and successful fisher woman I ever knew.

We are a long way from Maryland. The owner is very difficult to get permission from. I lived here for 6 years before he gave me permission. It has a lot of weed and grass that makes for problems hanging up. But I know you are joking. Alabama does have a lot of good lakes and rivers.

Glad to hear she had a good time. One of my greatest joys has been watching my 2 sons catch when they were young. I had my granddaughter on our dock with a fiberglass cane pole at age 3 (I think) she’s now 7, wants a “real” rod & reel of her own + her own tackle box. Her uncle Jason & I are going soon. Want her ready to go by May for the MN fishing opener.

To all Minnesota Grandmas & Grandpas, check with the MN DNR. You can buy a life time license, very reasonable prior to age 4 or 5, if the grandchild moves to another state it’s still good if they provide the MN DNR with the out of state address (& probably the dl#) they still get a MN fishing license at no cost. A great deal for the grandkids & the MN DNR!

So nice to know you have a granddaughter that likes to fish Herb. And the fact that she caught more and bigger fish than you only tells me that you are a good teacher!!
