What you mean by "legal"? They have to be 22" to keep em, other than that, go for it. No season, you can catch em year round, and in Carlsbad you can keep 5. I've never fished Carlsbad, but I used to fish San Diego, Imperial Beach and Point Loma. Shrimp or squid is good bait. Or if you like throwing a lure, the luckycraft surf pointer will catch anything that eats other fish. I've got a good friend who lives in Oceanside and she's always posting pictures of the beach there on Facebook. Looks very fishable. Anywhere you can walk the beach and surf isn't too rough - go down and take a look at low tide, look for troughs, rocks, ridges - those are the places to target when the tide comes in, that's where they hang out. Good luck, post some pictures. If you see Naomi say hi to her for me. She won't be fishing.

Limit is correct for California South of Point Sur. Readers should note that California limit for Halibut North of Point Sur is three Halibut.

Spirit of 27 is correct. Lucky Crafts are the the standard must have for Halibut in SoCal surf where I fished.

Try the lagoon by the old power plant.
Bass are in there also.
A drop shot rig with a white plastic grub will also work.

What kind of bass Larry? Like I said, never fished there.

What I meant to say is first legal size butt. Caught plenty smaller ones on LC 110 and kastmaster. Still searching for legal size butt. Yes fish power plant lagoon plenty. Im always on the beach.

Keep throwing that 110 - they're out there. I used to have pretty good luck down San Diego way with shell on shrimp from the grocery. Never caught a lot of them, but every once in a while. PB was one that hung over (all the way around) the tail gate of my Ranger pickup. It tried to take a couple of my fingers off, so I ate it.

Calico bass in saltwater (ocean)and harbors near entrances and jetties in SoCal. Used my kayak around docks and islands in Newport Harbor.
