How to become a better angler?

Hi everyone! Fishing is probably my favorite past time and I enjoy it immensely. I want to become a better angler and increase my knowledge base. I don't want to just go out to a pond and throw out artificial worms all day and be happy with what I catch. This past year I bought my own personal rod and started my tackle box, mostly fishing for bass and panfish. I would like to know how to target certain species and get the most out of my time on the water. Would you recommend I watch videos or read articles? Thank you!

--I’m a big fan of YouTube and usually find the info I’m looking for. Also articles are much needed help, but I’d have to say just talking to local anglers has been the most valuable to me. They know what works different times of year. They don’t give up the honey holes , but most of them will get you on the right track. Just moved to Tennessee from Utah and it’s almost like starting all over on the knowledge level. When I go out on Ky lake or Barkley I’m soaking in as must as possible and at the end of the day I’ve gained some knowledge not only that part of the lake, but observing other anglers. Yes I do have binoculars in the boat and if I ask someone I usually get some good advice. There are some very friendly people here and most are willing to share. Loving retirement and tight lines.

Zia. Articles and U tube videos are helpful. In my 60+ years in this sport I learned more from fishing with people who were better than I was. The majority often do not want to fish with a novice, but I frequently promised to pay for the gas or their services and that really helped out. Today, I make it a point to spend some time in the boat with those still learning the sport.

Be a human sponge, Adsorb everything you can. UTube, reading, and if you can afford it, hire a guide for half a day in the area you wish to fish. While fishing, ask a million questions! Try to find a fishing buddy who is older and experienced, and as the prior post, offer to pay for the gas, but ask a lot of questions. It will take time, you will never get to the top of the learning curve over night...No one ever has. Just Sayin....RJS

Many moons ago, I decided I wanted to concentrate a lot on mastery of specific lures in a season
One year I fished spinner baits a ton
The next I fished flipping technique with jigs and creature baits
The next was dedicated to crankbaits
So on and so forth
I didn’t use those baits exclusively, but made a special point of putting in the hours to learn to get the most out of it thru the changing seasons.
After many years of this I feel I’m pretty well rounded. I feel confident going to a new lake, interpreting the conditions and selecting appropriate techniques until I find what produces. Then I key in on that productive technique effectively because I may have learned it 20 years before.
I still do this to some extent. Last year it was flutter spoons on deep ledges.
