Fluoro/mono to braid spooling question

I keep hearing you should spool a few feet of fluoro or mono to your reel before tying it to braid and spooling with that the rest of the way. What are the benefits of this? I can't really find anything on Google but I'm assuming it gives the braid something to grip onto since it's lighter and more slick then fluoro/mono, cutting down on backlash maybe?

Which is better to use? Fluoro or mono? And are the weights one-to-one? If I'm using 10lbs braid should I use 10lbs fluoro/mono or lighter? What's the ratio?

Sorry for the probably stupid question and thanks for any help!

It’s backing, helps the braid “bite” into something that isn’t your spool. Helps with slippage. I personally use fly line backing when spooling braid. I wouldn’t worry to much abt lb test but a good rule of thumb is for ever lb of mono equates to 2lb of braid. So 10 pound mono would be 5lb braid. Hope this helps!

A reason to use a mono backing, like I do, is that it is much cheaper than braid, therefore you could possibly use the same amount of braid for 2 reels instead of one. That’s why I did it, and using fluoro for that same reason wouldn’t be smart Bc it’s not as cheap as mono.

Some spools are not made to hold braid so if you do not put mono on the bottom, the braid could slip on it. Also, mono is cheaper than braid so it saves you money. Lastly, for offshore fishermen it is often used as an indicator that you are getting close to the bottom of the reel.

Ive found a thin piece of tape or tacky cellophane does well to keep braid from slipping on my 500 series reels where i need every foot to be braid, but on bigger reels its nice to put on mono backing to save some $$.

It depends on what you are doing ,what kind of line to use .Go on You Tube thay have a lot of demos. On all kinds of fishing subjects . But u use it for backing for the more costly lines .
