Bluegill???

So, I’m normally a halfway decent angler. I missed at least three fish today. Here are the things I noticed. The bites were small and very fast double strikes. Nothing like how an LM inhales baits which feels to me like a freight train hitting my bait, while a smallie always feels like I just gently bumped a log.

So either...... I was not fully in the zone today (I really didn’t feel like being at the lake)

They were bluegill.

Your thoughts?

(Lake castaic. Upper lake, 56 degree water temp, gently cloudy sky, water clarity gently stained able to see through to about 3’ of water)

Sounds very bluegill like to me. Pecking at the tail.

What kind of lure were you fishing? I’ve had males do what you describe protecting beds.

It could have been, but it could have been bass too. They don’t always feed the way we think they should or want what we think they do. Next time try changing your presentation or even your lure.

Did that. Whatever kind of fish it was. Wouldn’t bite again.

Could have been a Crappie! or a Bass!...according to my partner (he is a tour bass champ),...." bass sometimes checks on your lure or bait and by bumping it very light".....his advice is ALWAYS HOLD that Trigger Finger on the Line.... and BE Alert for those very subtle Touches and reel-in as fast as U can...(n do NOT snap the rod YET) until U really feel the fish hooked, then snap a bit against the direction of the fish, and keep a FIRM Tension (NOT Aggressive, otherwise U lost the fish) on the Line until the fish is netted....Hope that helps....otherwise change your presentation/ lure/bait/color/retrieval motion/etc.

Could be Crappie they are crafty critters and bite very light ,you have to watch your line and rod tip .
