The End of My Rodeo Career!

Well, I reckon it was when I was about 18 or 19, and in the fall of the year when the county fair had come to town, me and some of my buddies had come into town to see the sights, the girls, and partake in the rodeo events that were being held that weekend.

Now, twixt you, me and the fencepost, I wasn’t any too keen about riding any of those bronc horses, either with or without a saddle and I certainly wasn’t going to get on one of those Brahma bulls. There just wasn’t enough money to entice me to ride a bull and the common saying about bull riding was it was “a good way to meet pretty nurses!”

Well, we had a few beers and finally got up close to the place where we could finally get mounted, and there was a lot of joshing and challenges. Finally, I was given the challenge to “put up or shut up” even thought I really hadn’t said a word about riding that bronc horse.

But I had enough Bud to be feeling my oats, so I hitched up my Levi’s, and took a deep seat in the saddle and said, “Let’er rip. Well, the first jump or two, I was doing fine, but the third jump I was about to be thrown and was slipping and trying to hold on for dear life. I was about to hit the ground and was hollering, “Momma” and just then the manager of Walmart came out and unplugged that monster and saved my life. Just Sayin…RJS
