Canoe or Kayak?

I'm thinking about buying a canoe or a fishing kayak.

Looking at canoes they seem like they are a lot harder to transport, as I could put a kayak in my truck bed but a canoe I would have to buy a truck rack which is an added expense.

The main reason for a canoe is I could bring a friend with me so I'm not out on the water alone. Owners of kayaks or canoes, any thoughts?

I’ve had a canoe for probably 15 years. When it was just my wife and I wed go out quite a bit. But then when we started having kids, they were too little to bring out so it’s sat in storage for probably the last ten.

Now the kids are bigger so we can probably start bringing them out but we can’t both go alone. I picked up a kayak last year because the canoe is just too much work for me to do solo.

So really it depends on the logistics. Kayaks are great for solo trips but if you want to bring someone else you can’t beat a canoe. They’re both awesome tools but have different uses.

I think a large part of that would be the question of how often you'll be fishing by yourself compared to with a friend. Personally, I would choose the kayak because of the convenience factor(s): not having to purchase a rack, quick and easy loading and unloading, being able to go by yourself, etcetera.

On the other hand, if you have a buddy that would definitely go with you somewhat often, a canoe would be better(if they don't have a kayak). And perhaps they would split/share the cost.

Or you could get the best of both worlds, and find a little boat with a trailer, if your truck has a receiver.

Canoes and kayaks come in different lengths. I chose a solo canoe (Old Town Pack) over a fishing kayak. Mine is 12’ and weighs 35 lbs.

I would 100% get a Bote rover, for it and every attachment is around $4300, holds up to 500lbs and can have a motor, or you can paddle around, you can fit 2 people but it’s a little sketchy.

Go with a hobie pro angler 12 or 14 foot all depends on how big you are. Im 6 ft 2 weigh 220 and my pro angler 14 is fantastic it will handle rough water if you pay attention to what your doing. Ive caught 35 lb redfish and 12 oz bream. It works great. Barney

Ever try to put a moose, deer or elk on a kayak? There are 1 man canoes down to 9 feet long and are easy to handle. Mine is 9 feet 4 inches and has seen a million fish and many big game animals. Plus it will carry me and two grandkids.

My kayak is 12'2" ish Long / 33" wide / weighs 64 lbs and its Very Stable... I am 64 Years old and i can load and unload myself into bed of my truck ... I was Leary about kayaks being tipsy until i tried one..... I think my kayak is Less tipsy than most canoes i have been in.... Flat bottom canoes i am sure would be more stable than touring type depending on beam width and bottom type.... 33" and wider Fishing kayaks are stable , they track well etc..... Best thing to do is too try different Fishing Kayaks .... Buy AMERICAN ! There are Quality American Made Kayaks out there for under $900.00 .... I know Native Watercraft is One .... You will have too research others...

Thank you Mullin. I am also 64 , 65 in August. Like you I have always been a little unsure of kayaks being tippy. I have heard people say it is hard to lean and net fish, fear of tipping over. I will have to check them out myself.

Canoes are very stable when the wait is low and centered in the keel. Cuz most canoes have a smooth bottom they tend to slip in the water more than a kayak.

Pelican catch120! That would be an excellent kayak for you to check out for not being Tippy and having most of the amenities. For between five and six hundred bucks.

I have had both and for fishing .get a Gheenoe 13 ft. Its a lot more stable than eather of the others and you can put it in the back of your truck .,and you have a lot more room ,put a trolling motor on it and your have a real great fishing boat . Look on Crags list for a used one ,if you don't want a new one . Look at them at Gheenoe .net ,bet you will get hooked on them .I sold my bass boat to get a super 16ft. and it goes like a bat out of hell .
