I don't have a choice with my wife though. LOL

Seriously I agree with RJ.
Normally the low point for any stock is just before or at it's "Financial Year End". The stock market is mainly about "Hype". About 6-8 weeks before the year end is the "High" point of the year. Then the Brokers start to get wind of how the company is really doing and it starts to slide.
I use to repair terminals at brokers and would check 2-3 stocks as a final test of the repair. After doing that for a few years I noticed the trend. Also every year my company would offer the "Stock Option Plan", it was higher than the then current market price. The stock split twice and then when the bottom dropped out, it was back down to the original offer price. IE the value of it "Real Assets". The factory and land that it owned.
That taught me that the true value of a company is the worth of it's "Real" Assets. Everything else is Hype.

CD's, Bonds, are better. Gold has to go above 10% from when you bought it to make a profit. Gold is a "Hedge", not an investment. Why 10%? because you pay a 3% buy fee and a 3% Certify Fee when you buy it. Then when you sell it, you pay another 3% sell fee. Now if you had bought it back in 1980 at $360 an Oz., yes you would have made a lot selling now. Now even if you "Panned Gold" you will pay a fee to refine it and a fee to sell it. Remember my "Handle"? AU Digger? I looked for lost mines ect for 25 years on vacations and followed the gold market a lot back then. I wanted to know what I had to do to convert it to cash and learned a lot about it. Just like I learned a lot about the stock market.
I'll stop and get off my Soapbox. Stay Safe and have a Safe and Happy New Year.
I never understood why one should/would trust some... (show quote)

Interesting Au, i bet RJ will converse on that point of view soon.

RJS, it is hard not to be pessimistic considering how mucked up the politicos have things, but I try to be cautiously optimistic. Scenes like this one near a fine honey hole help me keep some balance. Here's to hope for a good 2021 with lots of time on the lakes and maybe some good catching too!

Imagine a doomsday scenario where our entire economy collapses and your money has lost nearly all of its value. The only thing that you could trade with would be goods of some kind. It wouldn't be simple to buy groceries or a tank of gas with gold. What would you use for currency?

Ammo? It would be valuable and in demand. What else?

Barnacles,
I have always found references to liquor being something to have to barter in a time when everything falls apart. But it might also expose you to risks . . .

Investing early last year in plex-a-glass would have made you a rich man.
At 76 YO I used to say that I didn't open my eyes until I took a big sniff.
If I didn't smell candles or flowers I figured I was still alive and get up.
Now if you can't smell it might be a sigh that you have CV19.
So now when I get up I pour myself about two fingers of Scotch. If I can smell it and taste it I know I'm OK. I retest my self 5-6 times during the day.

Most of the good bars in and around the New Orleans area poured J&B as their well scotch. Liked it then and kept drinking it.

Yeah, that's good stuff. If J&B fits your palette you should try Pinch. Costs a little more (not a lot more) but that's my favorite.

I have a bottle of Haig and Haig Pinch bottle. Sip it every now and then. Also have a few bottles of single malt that a friend likes when he comes over.

OK. I've tried a lot of different single malts and I've never found one that I like as well as the blends. The Macallan is pretty good stuff, but at almost 70 dollars a bottle, I'll stick with Pinch. Or J&B.

A bottle of single malt will last a long time on my bar. J&B not so long.

Well, that is what I find as a general tone. And I sure hope we are correct, but there is certainly no guarantee! If for instance I had $200,000 in cash and was considering investing in the stock markets on next Monday, would I? Absolutely not!

I've always have heard a pessimist is never disappointed if things turn out bad it is what he expected and if it turns out good he is pleasantly surprised. that being said I tend to be a optimistic realist. I expect this year to be a better year concerning Covid but financially not so sure. we may coast for a while but with the new administration and all the trillions in new debt I expect we will return to inflation as the dollar is devalued but I am no financial guru by any means so RJS what would you do with your $200,000 dollars to protect it from a falling market on one hand and being devalued by inflation on the other hand?

But I have been thinking what our nation has lost this past year has been trust. Truth has been set aside and we have been lied to, deceived, fed false information, kept from hearing true information at all levels to the point that we can not trust our government, or press, or justice system, or medical "experts". This lack of trust is going to eat away at the very fabric of our society unless there is a real and honest return to the truth and all you spiritual minded realize this is not primarily an intellectual conflict but a spiritual one of truth vs lies, light vs darkness, and good vs evil and will take a spiritual revival to turn it all around it will not be solved by a change of government but a change of heart that only God can bring about. (so to quote a wise man "just saying")
