I fish the middle section of the Allegheny river. There are lots of walleye and crappy here but little structure. In thepast the river was dredged as deep as 50' 40 t0 60 feet wide. any sugestions as to where i can find these fish. The guys who do seem to catch them regularly are very quiet as to where they find them. there are also 40 to 60 pound flat heads here. I am totally open to suggestions, as i am new to this and learning. I have been a fly fisherman most of my life.

If I'm trying to find a walleye on a strange lake I will slow troll, around the 1 mph range, a spinner with a crawler, leech or minnow on it. If the lake has little structure, look for a sudden drop off. Work from shallow to deep in a zig zag path, from 4' to maybe 25' this time of the year. They will spawn when the water temp. is between 42 - 48 degrees. If you catch one, throw a marker out and put a jig and a crawler, leech or minnow on it and work the area. Walleyes are a pod fish and if you find one, there are others. Tight Lines!
If you have a fish finder, look for rock formations, any drop offs or bait fish schools. Great idea about a zig zag pattern and of course markers. Good luck!
Walleye see very well in lo light areas, if there is little structure look for shaded areas where trees or other things hang over the water. Walleye are an ambush predator fish so they like to hide and strike so look for any areas even as small as a culvert or inlet into the water. As for the Flatheads, find holes and drop offs and throw some live bluegill or other live baitfish and be patient.
