I’m looking at a chest pack to carry things to have handy when fishing. I know there’s vests, chest packs, and slings. I’m sure I don’t want a sling. I have been digging the Fishpond Cervaza chest pack. I’ve toyed with making a lanyard out of paracord as well. What’s your thoughts?

I’m a big fan of my sling, just curious as to why you don’t want one?

I would think it’d get in the way. Maybe I’m wrong. What kind do you have?

I have a Patagonia Stealth Atom and it holds everything I need for fishing and then some. Doesn’t get in the way at all. Only thing I wish I had was some place to strap a rod tube on for hikes into the backcountry (the older ones had it).

I have an Orvis sling pack. Pretty sure its one of their safe passage sling packs, although it doesnt look exactly like the ones on their website so perhaps they updated it. Anyway, I really like it because it has a good amount of storage, but its also pretty compact. Best of all when you want something in it you can just undo a small clip and it swings around to your torso. When you dont need it, it stays out of the way. Super handy and just feels very well thought out, like it was designed by fly fisherman for fly fisherman(which is true).

I have a sling and a fanny pack. It neither gets in the way. And the fanny helps keep things in “currently using” accessible.

Most fishing slings are designed for the right shoulder, correct? I would only want one that went over my left shoulder.

I do believe that is correct, but my guess is there are some lefty ones on the market somewhere.

That’s the thing, I’m right handed. It just feels weird having something on my casting side.

Hmmmm... I can see that but Im sure youd get used to it quickly. I never even really thought about that personally.

I'm a big fan of my Simms Waypoint. It's designed as a hip pack but it's got attachment points for a neck stap which lets it ride well as a giant chest pack in deeper water.

You might Google Igloo. I did and a 70 quart wheeled marine ice chest with 20% discount is $224. I dont know about shipping. I've used Igloos for 20 to 30 years and found them to be reasonably priced and durable. I have no idea about how they fare as for as keeping ice frozen for long periods. But under normal 1 to 3 day excusions they work great. Just Sayin...RJS
