Hello! I'm new to the group and just wanted to introduce myself! I live in LaPine, Oregon and I love to go fishing with my pitty Blue. Lately I'm stuck on Wipers at Ana Reservoir. I've been several times but haven't had the privilege of landing one yet. Anyone have some inside advice?

Good Mornin, Emp. Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for putting your location down on the profile page. Sorry, I have never fished for or caught a wiper. But, from what I have researched you are fishing in the best place to catch one in the US. Good Luck!

Welcome to the Stage Emullinpope, sorry we don't have wipers here, but someone should be able to help you and Blue get some fish. Tight Lines!

An Oregonian after.... wipers ?
Gonna have to plead "Thumper Rule" on that subject.
Left Kansas 36 years ago in order to never have to fish for a bass, ever again...lol !
Sorry, no clue, so no help from me.
Now then... trout, salmon and steelhead, kokanee, surf perch, ling cod, rockfish ? Got lots of tips.
Boat or shore fishing ?

Hello E! Knew my name was a great one. It's my maiden name , Mullin. Originally from Cali...Forbstown/Oroville area. My Dad is originally from Etna, California. Married the same man twice hence mullin-pope!
Wipers out here like fresh meat, mostly chicken liver, salmon, etc. Went last night and fished until the snow storm blew in! I got a tui chub but no monster wiper. :(

I guess you have answered your own question, with the above link. Apparently Ana is the only place to go for them. I have not heard of any wipers in Oregon, much less being an effort of the state's stocking program.
Had they asked for input from the folks that pay their salary through our exorbitant license fees, I can assure you that "wipers" would be FAR down the list of desirous species.
The fact that they have only been stocked at Ana, a rather shallow lake, by Oregon standards, just adds to the mystery of WHY ? And how much of the "precious little working budget"(their constant whine and rationale for the ever-increasing fees) the admin of the state's hatcheries are spending in time, effort, hatchery space, etc., for this obviously unnecessary additional species.
I will definitely look further into the "effort", through the several articles given when one Googles Ana or wipers in Oregon, to determine why and how and WHO is responsible for this action, an exercise in futility in a state where warm water species rarely survive, much less thrive.
Want bass in Oregon ? Selmac (Josephine Co.), Tenmile (on the coast..Curry Co.?), Hyatt (used to be a stellar trout lake until some idiot, not the state, transferred some Largemouth in and they are now the dominant SPECIES, ruining a great mountain lake in Jackson Co.)and I am sure there are others that I am unaware of...... THAT WILL BE ADDED TO THE LIST ABOVE, OF LAKES THAT MY BOATS WILL NEVER, EVER LAUNCH IN........no $$$$ from me (and many like-minded Oregonians) for the peripheral businesses and campground fees around the above lakes.

BTW, have spoken to 3 other fishermen about this, since the original post. To a man, each, when informed of the revelation, replied...."WTF ?? In Oregon ?? Why the he!! is that happening ?" "That's absolutely shameful" said one. "We need that to stop, right now" said another.
So thanks (?) for enlightening me, emullinpope.... enjoy it while you can, I suppose..... might not be an option once you run out of the every-other-year stocking presently in the water.

Welcome Emullin. I've fished for wipers in utah and trolled for them using three in. White twister grubs. 1/4 lead head.Caught a bunch. Other fishermen caught them on mussels on the bottom. They fight like freight trains. My best was 5lbs. Good luck.
