My Texas Economic Indicator!

Since most of my family, two daughters and five grandchildren and one grand nephew live in Austin, we are regularly on the road twixt Austin and Houston. As I drive on the section of I-10, I have been accustomed to counting the tractor trailer loads of pipe casing headed west, probably to Midland and Odessa.

For you not familiar with the oil patch, when a well is a producer, and it must be finished by having a pipe casing set. The casing must be on site and Haliburton is called to cement this casing in the well bore once the drill pipe has been removed.
For the roughnecks, and for those of you who do not know the term, this is what the drilling crew are called, it is round the clock job until they have finished cementing the well.

So, when I start on I-10 at Columbus TX, and end about 75 miles later in Houston I often count 17 to 20 tractor trailer loads of casing headed west. This would indicate to me a very healthy drilling activity in that area. Obviously, it does not mean that all the trucks are headed to that one location, nor do I count other oilfield equipment, but somewhere west, we are doing o.k.!

However, nothing lasts forever, so I am thinking about what I should use to replace tractor trailer loads of oil field casing in the future, and this trip I believe I have found a suitable substitute. I have just noticed that there was an unusual number of Amazon Prime trailer trucks on I-10 this trip. Since they are announcing monster warehouses being built or planned both in San Antonio and on the edge of Houston, perhaps this will be my next economic indicator! Just Sayin…RJS

There is also an Amazon 820,000 sq ft fulfillment and distribution center being built in Pflugerville (Austin).
It is due to open in 2021 with over 1000 planned job openings.

Looks like we are going to be swamped with Amazon prime! Hope you and your family are having a joyful, safe, and merry Christmas. Bob. And Jean
