Thats nice of you Ben Im to far away. Never had it down here.
They are like fish French fries.
Pretty tasty.
Sister in law mom lives in Cleveland. She brings em from Lake Erie.
She Cuts abdomen with scissors. Rinses em out . Dips them in flour and fries em head , tail and all. Hit em with salt while they are still hot.
We eat them as fast as they can be fried.
As soon as they are gone it’s calamari time.
Haven’t heard but I don’t think we are doing this this year.
I’m kinda bummed
Used to here in Oregon in the Cowlits and Sandy River. Been many years since they were here and legal to take. I use them for Sturgeon Bait.
Jeremy, you catch any big sturgeon this year?
No. Never tried to be honest.
Used to eat em at fish fries in Indiana when i's growing up there. 60 years ago or so. Fish French fries - good description. They're even good dipped in ketchup, just like fries.

Don't know what we call creek chub is the same as smelt but we would sain net them when I was a kid and gut them and deep fry them. Some were kinda large so we would scale those. My aunt liked BBQ sauce for dip.

Yep or cocktail sauce or tartar.
They run so thick in creeks and tributaries Of lake Erie that people use long handled dip nets to scoop em up
Kind of a traditional regional thing.

I thought that was a country thing or poor people thing that they just sent us to the creek to feed the visiting family.
Lol. We are all poor people relatively speaking. Bill gates ain’t eating smelt this Christmas.
His loss.
We don’t have them where I live. It’s a Lake Erie thing. They are native to Atlantic Ocean. I guess they somehow migrated up the Great Lakes.
They are a forage fish. Like big minnows.
For some reason the only time we eat em is Christmas.
Some folk in my region can suckers.
It’s a pretty big deal in some places.
Places in Michigan whitefish are a very big deal.
You eat them now because they run up rivers and spawn now and get netted.
